Dogs and humans have been living side by side as far back as it is possible to study history. It has always been some type of interaction between dogs and humans, and often it has been shown with a perspective on mental health. The background of this study presents the history between the dog and human, animal assisted therapy, dogs inside of the care environment and autism. This study's aim is to look at how the dog impacts children with autism, but also how it is possible to integrate dogs in the work of a socionom. This study is a systematic literature study containing qualitative and quantitative articles. The analysis has been made by thematic analysis and a theoretical analysis because the empiricism has been analyzed through the theory, The human-animal relational theory. The result has been categorized in three categories; Dog in a therapeutic environment, Dog in the home, Dog and nature. The categories help navigate against the aim of the study. The result shows positive effects. The positive effects that have been shown are developed cognitive abilities like social interaction, possibility to regulate emotions and developed abilities to communicate.
