The aim of this study is to contribute with an increased knowledge of how gender identity in regards to football players is articulated online and how this can be analyzed with discourse analysis. This will be done through an analysis of comments made on online forums in regards to the introduction of female football players in the game Fifa 16. The comments were gathered via an online observational study and analyzed in accordance with Laclau and Mouffes theory regarding discourse theory as a analytical tool. In the results we can see a lot of conflicting opinions from the participants on the forums and that many of them fear the potential consequences of this addition. There was also some debate and confusion amongst the forum participants in regards to who these additions were made for, often leaving the commentators frustrated and speculating in regards to why the company behind the game had decided to add female football players as playable characters in the game. Furthermore, we could also determine from the discourse analysis that the discourse regarding the gender identity of football players, was primarily focused on the body and its capabilities depending on factors such as gender and looks.
