”De är ock ett kraftigt slägte, härdade af sitt stränga arbete” : Manlighetskonstruktion i den värmländska flottarens historia. / They are thought a strong group, hardened by there rough work. : Masculinity construction in the Värmländska raftsman history.

There are many preconceived notions about Sweden´s male raftsmen. Many of them areexaggerated and can be found in the many fiction books about raftsmen. In Värmland in middle of Sweden, there is a small amount of fiction books and research about the raftsmen from Värmland, even though the raftsmen from Värmland were known for their skill duringthe 19th century. In the fiction texts, it is common for the raftsmen to be described as a tough man. To understand how the raftsmen from Värmland were perceived during their active era one must look at the masculinity construction of the raftsmen. To look at the masculinity construction of the raftsmen from Värmland, Connell's theory and Humlesjö's research has been used and their research on masculinity contrasts. Newspapers with illustrative descriptions and interviews with practical descriptions of the raftsmen from Värmland have been analyzed. There have been exaggerated notions and described emigration within the country in the source materials, but above all the source material has constructed the raftsmen from Värmland as an ideal man in the performance of his work, with physical strength in a combination with cognitive thinking.
