Genetikens begreppsundervisning för andraspråkselever: Helt naturligt, eller? : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om begreppsundervisning i biologi på högstadienivå ur ett andraspråksperspektiv

This study aims to research five teachers’ teaching practices regarding teaching terminology in the genetics module in the biology course at the compulsory level in Sweden. Another aim of the study is to research whether the teachers differ in practices when teaching students with Swedish as a second language and what kind of resources the teachers feel they need to support second-language students in a better way. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews and analysed through the method of Content Analysis. The results show that numerous activities that the teachers claim they use while teaching support learning and expand students’ vocabulary. The results also show that the teachers describe similar challenges regarding teaching second-language students. The study finds that the teachers can achieve more inclusive teaching through simple means and that they need support from the school and colleagues when teaching terminology to second-language students.
