Previous issue date: 2015-06-01 / The word victimization has been used in literature as a reference to suffering violence. In
this project, the experience and suffering of violence by adolescents from Goiânia were
studied. The sample of this study were students from the public state school, chosen
because they corresponded to the desired age group. The violence against adolescents has
been a great factor of social concerns. Brazilian statistics show that the numbers have
increased in the last years. The concern about this specific population occurs due to the
vulnerability to which they are socially exposed. At this group age, violence occurs not
only in the domestic environment, but also in the streets and among peers. On the other
hand, they are not under their tutors supervision, which, most of the times, makes them
easy targets for victimization. Brazilian literature highlights many empirical studies
demonstrating teenagers victimization accompanied by new violent expositions,
reinforcing the violence cycle of this group. However, the concern is extended to the
consequences of violence on teenagers mental health. It is a fact that not all of them will
become ill because of victimization or because of the violent context, but the study results
show that the damages can be immediate and also long term, with consequences to their
adult life. Facing this context, the studies in this thesis become very relevant, as it aims to
demonstrate that the experience of violence leads to new victimizations and these cause
damage to the mental health of adolescents in short and long terms. In the first article a
systematical revision of the studies about victimization, revictimization, polyvictimization
and mental health in Brazilian adolescents is presented. In the second one, the descriptive
statistics about victimization, revictimization and polyvictimization, are presented in the
Last year and Throughout Life, as well as the description of the most frequents kinds . The
third essay presents the correlation between the different perspectives of victimization and
the correlations between the victimization in the Last year and Throughout Life. The
fourth and last essay evaluates the presence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms
in three adolescent groups: non-victimized, once victimized and revictimized. The results
of all of these empirical studies confirm the thesis that violence leads to violence, due to
the experience of victimization which made the adolescents vulnerable to new
victimizations and the victimized and revictimized groups showed significant differences
between internalized and externalized symptoms means. / O termo vitimização tem sido usado pela literatura para se referir ao sofrimento de
violência. Neste trabalho, foi estudado a vivência e sofrimento de violência por
adolescentes de Goiânia. A população alvo deste estudo foram estudantes de escolas
públicas estaduais por atenderem a faixa etária pretendida. A violência contra adolescentes
tem sido fator de grande preocupação social. As estatísticas brasileiras mostram que os
números têm aumentado nos últimos anos. A preocupação com esta população dá-se pela
vulnerabilidade a que estão expostos na sociedade, pois nessa faixa etária a violência
ocorre além do ambiente doméstico, também em vias públicas e entre pares. Por outro
lado, também estão longe da supervisão de seus responsáveis, na maioria das vezes, o que
os tornam alvos fáceis para vitimizações. A literatura brasileira destaca vários estudos
empíricos demonstrando a vitimização de adolescentes acompanhadas de novas exposições
violentas, reforçando o ciclo de violência neste grupo. No entanto, a preocupação estendese
às consequências da violência para a saúde mental dos adolescentes. É fato que nem
todos irão adoecer devido à vitimização ou ao contexto violento, porém os resultados dos
estudos demonstram que os danos são imediatos, mas também podem ser a longo prazo
com consequências para a vida adulta. Diante deste contexto, torna-se muito relevante os
estudos desta tese que tem como objetivo demonstrar que a vivência de violência leva a
novas vitimizações e que estas provocam danos a saúde mental dos adolescentes a curto e
longo prazo. No primeiro artigo é apresentada uma revisão sistemática dos estudos sobre
vitimizações, revitimizações, polivitimização e saúde mental em adolescentes brasileiros.
No segundo artigo são apresentadas as estatísticas descritivas sobre vitimizações,
revitimizações e polivitimizações no Último Ano e ao Longo da Vida, além de descrever
os tipos mais presentes. No terceiro artigo são apresentadas as correlações entre os
diferentes crivos de vitimizações e as correlações entre as vitimizações do Último Ano e
ao Longo da Vida. E o quarto e último artigo avalia a presença de sintomas internalizantes
e externalizantes em três grupos de adolescentes: não vitimizados, vitimizados uma vez e
revitimizados. Os resultados de todos estes estudos empíricos confirmam a tese de que
violência leva a violência, pois a vivência de vitimizações tornou os adolescentes
vulneráveis a novas vitimizações e os grupos vitimizados e revitimizados apresentaram
diferenças significativas entre as médias de sintomas internalizantes e externalizantes.
