This master thesis analyses the need and the purpose of pedestrian areas (PA), their significance for the environment, social sphere and for the system of communication. Main problems, related to increasing urban traffic and congestion are described and impact on the quality of city life is identified. Possibilities for development of pedestrian area in modern cities; social, economical, ecological effect of PA. Main issues (Physical and Functional Qualities; Sociability and Public Life; Human comfort and Needs), emerging in the course of planning new PA and analyzing existing ones, evaluation of their quality and success are reviewed. On the base of posed criteria, analyze is done as regards main pedestrian territories of biggest cities` centers (Vilnius, Kaunas), proposals are made. After the analyze of theoretical and practical aspects of PA development is done, the conclusions and proposals of the thesis are provided. The thesis consists of 6 parts: introduction, automobilization in cities, PA, pedestrian areas in Lithuanian cities` centers, conclusions and proposals, list of literature. The volume of the thesis is 105 pages of text, 22 pictures, 82 bibliography sources. Appendix to the thesis are included.
