Hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIX un número muy reducido de la población mundial alcanzaba llegar a la edad de la vejez / ancianidad. Hoy, en el siglo XXI, gracias a los avances de la ciencia y de la tecnología, la disminución de la natalidad y de la mortalidad infantil, así como el mejoramiento de las condiciones sociales del ambiente, la población adulta mayor es cada vez más numerosa; y el cuidado de la salud de esta población se ha constituido en un problema de salud pública y de la seguridad social, que cada vez adquiere más importancia. Según estimaciones de la OPS (2003), para el año 2025, estarán viviendo en el planeta tierra un total de 600 millones de ancianos. La longevidad creciente tiene exigencias propias que no pueden desconocerse, y se debe asegurar que el alto costo necesario para llegar a “viejo” se vea compensado con una calidad de vida adecuada en el adulto mayor; la misma, que para su estudio, debe ser la expresión sentida del propio adulto mayor y de la familia. Los objetivos generales de la investigación fueron: determinar el significado que la expresión lingüística “calidad de vida del adulto mayor” tiene para el mismo adulto mayor y para su familia, con la finalidad de tener mejores elementos de juicio que garanticen un cuidado integral de la salud del adulto mayor. El tipo de investigación es cualitativa; el método es, descriptivo-interpretativo-comprensivo; se fundamentó en la “Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales” de Serge Moscovici, para construir entre los actores del estudio, la representación del significado de la calidad de vida del adulto mayor para sí mismo y para su familia. Se ejecutó la investigación en el Centro de Salud CLAS Laura Caller Iberico y el asentamiento humano del mismo nombre, en el Distrito de Los Olivos-Lima. / To second half of century XIX a number very reduced of the world-wide population reached to arrive at the age of the oldness/old age. Today, in century XXI, thanks to the advances of science and the technology, the diminution of the natality and infantile mortality, as well as the improvement of the social conditions of the atmosphere, the greater adult population is more and more numerous; and the care of the health of this population has been constituted in a problem of public health and the social security, that every time acquires more importance. According to estimations of the OPS (2003), for year 2025, they will be living in the planet earth a total of 600 million of old. The increasing longevity has own exigencies that cannot be not known, and it is due to assure that the high cost necessary to arrive at “old” is compensated with a quality of life adapted in the greater adult; the same one, that stops its study, must be the felt expression of the own greater adult and the family. The general missions of the investigation were: to determine the meaning that the linguistic expression “quality of life of the greater adult” has for he himself greater adult and his family, with the purpose of having better elements of judgment than they guarantee an integral care of the health of the greater adult. The type of investigation is qualitative; the method is, descriptive-interpretative-comprehensive; it was based on the “Theory of the Social Representations” of Serge Moscovici, to construct between the actors of the study, the representation of the meaning of the quality of the greater adult for itself and its family. One in center executed the investigation of Health CLAS Laura Iberian Caller and the slums of he himself name, in the District of Olive tree-File.
