Previous issue date: 2005-03-14 / The purpose of this study was to identify the role of religion on the family
members of patients with cancer while they were under medical treatment at the
university hospital of the medical school of the Federal University of Goiás. The
data was collected from individual interviews searching for the real meaning of
religion among the family members. It showed that the family, as one of the
main caretakers, is centered in the health desease process, being as vulnerable
as or more vulnerable than the own patient. Thus, in religion the family finds the
answers for their anxiety, and support to face the desease. The family members
are always willing to protect the patients, and often hide the truth from them
about the diagnosis. The fight for health comes to be exhausting and full of
drawbacks but the family members with all their strengy gather futher means to
offer the patients the necessary support to cope with the desease. The words
cancer and death provoke fielings such as fear and horror which are seldom
mentioned but commonly read between the lines. Conclusion: Religion provides
the family with strenght to cope with in their relatives. / A pesquisa objetivou identificar o papel da religião para os familiares dos
pacientes portadores de câncer durante o tratamento médico. Os sujeitos do
estudo foram pacientes em tratamento ambulatorial no Hospital das Clínicas de
Goiânia. Os dados foram coletados em entrevistas individuais, buscando o real
significado da religião entre os membros da família. Mostraram que a família,
sendo um dos principais cuidadores, está centrada no processo saúde-doença,
ficando tão ou mais vulnerável que o próprio paciente. Assim, encontra na
religião respostas para seus anseios e suporte para enfrentar a doença. O
membro familiar quer sempre proteger o paciente, estando junto a ele e, muitas
vezes, omitindo ou ocultando a verdade sobre o seu diagnóstico. A luta pela
saúde torna-se exaustiva e cheia de percalços, mas o membro familiar, com
toda a força que emana da família, reúne os demais componentes para oferecer
ao paciente o apoio necessário para enfrentar a doença. As palavras câncer e
morte trazem aos entrevistados sentimentos de pavor e medo. Pouco
mencionadas, são, porém, muito observadas nas entrelinhas. Conclui-se que a
religião fornece força à família e seus membros para enfrentarem o câncer em
parentes.
