Previous issue date: 2005-02-25 / This study aimed at investiganting the insertion of the first psychologists in the public health services in the State of Espírito Santo (Brazil) and its historical circumstances, presenting a contribution to the History of Psychology, Psychiatry and Public Health. Several aspects of these historical events have been analyzed: the situation of local psychiatry with details of the type of treatment furnished by psychiatrists to patients at the Hospital Adauto Botelho and the Pronto Socorro Psiquiátrico of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim before the insertion of the first psychologists following the arrival of these professionals at the psychiatric institutions; the partnerships established between psychiatrists and psychologists following the arrival of these professionals at the psychiatric institutions; the treatment furnished by psychologists to patients of these institutions and the
changes in the psychiatric institutions after the insertion of this new professional category, the psychologist. Two psychiatrists, three psychologists and an auxiliar nurse answered a semi-structured interview. Besides that, documents of the time supplied by the State Health Secretary and found in the Public Archives of Espírito Santo have been analyzed. The results indicate, among other points, that the insertion of the first psuchologists in the public health services in the Espírito Santo took place from 1976 on, in a local context full of criticism against the prevalent notion of madness and the therapeutics offered to those considered mentally ill and, even, taking into account the problem of social injustices. So, original actions were adopted at the time to face this situation. / O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar em que circunstâncias ocorreu a inserção dos primeiros psicólogos nos serviços públicos de saúde do Estado do Espírito Santo, contribuindo para a História da Psicologia, da Psiquiatria e da
Saúde Pública. Nesse sentido, foram descritos: a situação da psiquiatria local, através do detalhamento do tipo de tratamento dispensado pelos psiquiatras aos pacientes do Hospital Colônia Adauto Botelho e do Pronto Socorro Psiquiátrico de Cachoeiro de Itapemirim antes da entrada dos primeiros psicólogos nesses serviços; a parceria estabelecida entre psiquiatras e psicólogos a partir do encaminhamento destes para aquelas instituições; o tratamento dispensado pelos psicólogos aos usuários dos serviços e as alterações nas instituições psiquiátricas com inserção da nova categoria profissional. Dois psiquiatras, três psicólogos e uma auxiliar de enfermagem responderam a uma entrevista semi-estruturada.
Além disso, foram analisados documentos da época cedidos pela Secretaria de Saúde do Estado ou localizados no Arquivo Público do Espírito Santo. Os resultados indicaram, entre outras coisas, que a inserção dos primeiros psicólogos nos serviços públicos de saúde do Espírito Santo ocorreu a partir de 1976, dentro de um contexto local e amplo de críticas dirigidas à noção de loucura e à terapêutica oferecida aos considerados loucos e, mesmo, às injustiças sociais
de uma forma geral. Nota-se, dessa forma, uma originalidade nas ações colocadas em funcionamento naquele momento. Esta é uma história que interessa à área de uma forma geral, na medida em que se conecta com os mais diversos acontecimentos.
