Previous issue date: 2014-02-28 / FAPEAM / The dissertation Press and Gender: The Female Condition and Representations of Amazonian Women in the Provincial Press (1850-1889) deals with the female images that emanate from journals and shed light on a key portion of the history of the Amazonas province. In this work, we follow a path in which, in addition to presenting social and cultural aspects of the region, we map the various faces of the Amazonian woman. Indian, mestizo, black and white, these women are shown to be active in that society, and thus we were able to know their diverse living conditions. Secondly, we see how these same women engaged in relationships and struggle with the power sphere, especially legislative law. Even facing rigid rules that decreed the submission of women to father and husband, they found ways to circumvent these imperatives and demand from the system solutions and rights that were depreciated. / A dissertação Imprensa e Gênero: A Condição Feminina e as Representações da Mulher Amazonense na Imprensa Provincial (1850-1889) versa acerca das imagens femininas que emanam dos periódicos e que jogam luz sobre uma parcela fundamental da história da província do Amazonas. Neste trabalho realizamos um trajeto onde mapeamos as várias faces da mulher amazonense nos diferentes espaços da cidade. Índia, mestiça, negra e branca, estas mulheres mostraram-se ativas dentro da sociedade e, deste modo, pudemos conhecer suas variadas condições de vida. Num segundo momento, observamos como estas mesmas mulheres entabularam relações e lutas com a esfera do poder, em especial, a do direito legislativo. Mesmo diante de rígidas normas que decretavam a submissão feminina ao pai e ao esposo, as mulheres encontraram meios de burlar estes imperativos e exigir do sistema soluções e direitos que lhe eram negados.
