Previous issue date: 2011-10-25 / This work is part of the Research Line History and Description of the Portuguese language, focusing on investigations conducted in the Research Group of Portuguese Historiography of IP-PUC/SP. It reflects on the teaching of Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal, places where, in the second half of the nineteenth century, there are grammars and grammatical exercises that drive this process. Its authors planned to contribute specifically on studies of Primary Education. Considering these works, we could trace the route of the historiographical eaching Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal in the second half of the nineteenth century. Among them, we take as the corpus Portuguese Elementary Grammar, by A. Epiphanio Dias da Silva and grammar exercises and analysis models, by Jose Portugal, published in Portugal in 1876 and 1892, respectively, and the Portuguese Grammar. Childhood Grammar, and the work of João Ribeiro Notions of grammar, by Vieira de Menezes, published in Brazil. The theoretical model that underlies our research is the Historiography of Linguistics, which main representatives: Konrad Koerner and Swiggers Pierreand Europeans, and H. Dell Hymes, Stephen Murray, American researchers of the 1980s. From this perspective, we performed the analysis of selected documents through established categories, seeking to understand the route of the historiographical mother tongue teaching in Brazil and Portugal in the period investigated. As a result of our researches, we noted that in the second half of the nineteenth century, the external factors of language - social-historical facts - can affect the process of mother language teaching, especially in developing grammars and works of grammar exercises. We noted, moreover, that the analyzed works contributed greatly to the implementation of the teaching of Portuguese in Brazil and in Portugal / Esse trabalho insere-se na Linha de Pesquisa História e Descrição da Língua Portuguesa, centrado nas investigações levadas a efeito no Grupo de Pesquisa de Historiografia de Língua Portuguesa do IP-PUC/SP. Ele reflete sobre o processo de ensino da Língua Portuguesa no Brasil e em Portugal, locais em que, na segunda metade do século XIX, surgem gramáticas e exercícios gramaticais que impulsionam esse processo. Seus autores pretendiam contribuir, especificamente, nos estudos do Ensino Primário. Considerando tais obras, pudemos traçar o percurso historiográfico do ensino de Língua Portuguesa no Brasil e em Portugal, na segunda metade do século XIX. Dentre elas, tomamos como corpus a Grammatica Portugueza Elementar, de A. Epiphanio da Silva Dias e os Exercícios gramaticais e modelos de análise, de José Portugal, publicadas em Portugal, em 1876 e 1892, respectivamente; a Grammatica Portugueza. Grammatica da infância, de João Ribeiro e a obra Noções de grammatica, de Menezes Vieira, publicadas no Brasil, em 1881 e 1895, respectivamente. O modelo teórico que fundamenta nossa pesquisa é o da Historiografia Linguística que tem como principais representantes: Konrad Köerner e Pierre Swiggers, europeus, e H. Dell Hymes e Stephen Murray, americanos, pesquisadores da década de 1980. Nessa perspectiva, efetuamos a análise dos documentos selecionados, por meio de categorias estabelecidas, procurando desvelar o percurso historiográfico do ensino da língua materna, no Brasil e em Portugal, no período investigado. Como resultado de nossas pesquisas, constatamos que, na segunda metade do século XIX, os fatores externos à língua fatos histórico-sociais podem interferir no processo de ensino da língua materna, em especial, na elaboração de gramáticas e obras de exercícios gramaticais. Verificamos, além disso, que as obras analisadas contribuíram sobremaneira para a implementação do ensino da Língua Portuguesa no Brasil e em Portugal
