Previous issue date: 2014 / A suinocultura é atualmente uma atividade de importante papel na economia brasileira, principalmente para atender a demanda das exportações e suprir o mercado interno com uma das principais carnes consumidas pelos brasileiros. Este trabalho tem por objetivo realizar um estudo diagnóstico interpretativo sobre a distribuição dos empreendimentos suinícolas em uma dada região polo de criação no estado de Minas Gerais e contrapô-lo com o índice de qualidade de águas superficiais (IQA), calculado de maneira sistemática nas bacias hidrográficas do estado pelo Instituto Mineiro de Gestão de Águas (IGAM). A bacia do Rio Piranga — principal formador do Rio Doce, que contém o segundo maior rebanho suinícola do estado e, portanto, apresenta um maior desafio para a compatibilidade ambiental — foi particuarizada como território de estudo. A situação do licenciamento ambiental das granjas suinícolas neste território e sua possível interferência na qualidade das águas superficiais do estado serão o alvo da pesquisa, tendo como referência o índice de qualidade de águas (IQA). Para isto, realizar-se-á uma pesquisa interpretativa, sendo os dados levantados de natureza secundária e referentes respectivamente ao censo agropecuário de 2006/IBGE, ao cadastro estadual de granjas de suínos mantido pelo Instituto Mineiro de Agropecuária (IMA) no ano de 2012 e ao banco de dados do Sistema Estadual de Informações Ambientais (SIAM), correlacionados à distribuição de tais empreendimentos por meio destas fontes de informação. Dentre os resultados, espera-se verificar a responsabilidade destes empreendimentos no referido território no tocante à sua contribuição para a depleção da qualidade das águas superficiais. Além disso, espera-se conhecer a distribuição espacial no território das granjas na bacia a fim de se identificar os padrões de disposição e concentração da atividade e as possíveis interferências na sustentabilidade da atividade. De posse deste diagnóstico e identificado os desafios, poder-se-á propor diretrizes relacionadas com a atividade de suinocultura no local. ____________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: Swine production is now days an activity that plays an important role in the Brazilian economy, especially to meet the export demands and to supply the domestic market with a type of meat that is amongst the most consumed by Brazilians. This work aims to conduct an interpretive diagnostic study about the distribution of swine enterprises in a given pole region in the state of Minas Gerais and to counter it with the surface water quality index (WQI), measured in a systematic manner in the state river basin by the Instituto Mineiro de Gestão de Águas (IGAM). The Piranga River basin — main tributary of the Rio Doce, which contains the second largest pig herd in the state and, consequently, presents a greater challenge for environmental compatibility has been particularized as the territory of study. The issue of environmental licensing for pig farms in this area and its possible influence on the quality of the state surface waters will be the aim of the research, having as reference the water quality index (WQI). Thus, an interpretative research will take place, with the data collected from a secondary source related respectively to the agricultural census of 2006/IBGE, to the pig farms’s state registry maintained by the Instituto Mineiro de Agricultura (IMA) in the year of 2012 and to the database of the Sistema Estadual de Informações Ambientais (SIAM), correlated to the distribution of such enterprises through these information sources. Among the results, it is expected to verify the responsibility of the enterprises within this specific territory regarding its contribution to the depletion of the surface water quality. It is also expected to discover in the territory distribution of the farms in the basin in order to identify the patterns of disposition and concentration of activity and the possible interferences in the sustainability of the activity. On the basis of this diagnosis and the identification of the challenges, it will be possible to propose guidelines related to the activity of pig farming in this location.
