Previous issue date: 2008-09-01 / This thesis analyzed the importance given to entrepreneurship in Brazil. Based on the
biographies of well-known Brazilian entrepreneurs of the XIX and XX centuries, and on a
series of interviews with different actors dedicated to the development and diffusion of an
entrepreneurial culture in the beginning of the XXI century, we analyzed the institutional
changes that took place along this period regarding the importance given to the
entrepreneurial capacity in our culture. The confrontation between the biographies and the
interviews allowed us to point out the nature and coherence of our present institutional
architecture and the challenges to be faced up for the collective construction of our society.
From this analysis we can conclude that the Brazilian backwardness in terms of overcoming
economic inequalities and social injustice is caused mainly by lack of understanding of the
double movement necessary to the successful application of the rules of the capitalistic game,
and by the inefficiency of the Brazilian institutions in the reinforcement of those rules, and
not, by a lack of entrepreneurial capacity innate to our people. As a whole, the thesis suggests
that the shaping of an institutional environment (formal and informal) in favor of
entrepreneurship is one alternative for the achievement of a society more just, rich and
egalitarian and could be achieved if we raised the many veils imposed by taken-for-granted
notions transmitted throughout our socializing process.
