Previous issue date: 2009-02-26 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The Municipal Institute of Veterinary Medicine "Jorge Vaitsman" (IJV) is a public institution that since its foundation has been linked to the provision of veterinary services with the objective of public health promotion, especially related to the low-income population. The Institute has a large demand, which makes it a rich source of epidemiological data. The objective of this study was to know the demographic characteristics and acess its association with the health profile of the dogs assisted by the department of clinical attendance of IJV from January 2005 to December 2007. A proportional stratified random sample consisting of 2.208 animals were selected from the population of dogs attended by the service of clinical attendance of IJV in that period. Data on age, sex, race, adress, time of the year, clinical suspicion and request for additional tests of the animals were collected from the clinical attendance records and stored in a database developed with the help of the EPIINFO program version 3.3.2. Clinical suspicions were categorized into: zoonotic and non-zoonotic, and the last one in other seventeen categories according to their characteristics. The ?2 test, with significance level p ? 0.05, was applied to assess the association of diagnosed events and the variables studied, the prevalence rate and their confidence intervals were calculated. The coverage of attendance in IJV was represented by 29 of the 33 administrative regions of Rio de Janeiro, from where 95,6% of the assisted animals belonged to. The canine population was composed predominantly by females (52,9%) and dogs with specific breed (69,1%). The age pyramid has both wide base and wide summit, consisting of animals aged ? 1 year (18%) and animals older than eight years (28,4%), respectively. Only 4,1% of the clinical suspicions were zoonotic. The health profile of the assisted dogs was characterized by high prevalence of non-zoonotic diseases (82%), especially cancer, skin diseases, reproductive and digestive disorders, injuries and canine distemper. However, the profile was different between the sexes, females were more affected by cancer and reproductive disorders, and males by digestive disorders and skin diseases. Hemoparasites and reproductive disorders had race as a predisposing factor. Ear diseases were associated with Cocker Spaniel and Labrador, and hemoparasites with: Rotweiller, German Shepherd dog and Pitbull. Regarding age, zoonoses (including worms), canine distemper, poisoning and gastroenteritis were significantly more prevalent among the young dogs, and cancer (including breast tumors),injuries, urinary disorders and reproductive disorders (including pyometra) among the elderly. Additional tests were required in 31.3% of the animals. The prevalence of zoonotic and non-zoonotic diseases may be underestimated, since there was a large number of signs common to several diseases, zoonotic or not, instead of a clinical suspicion itself, which prevents a more accurate diagnosis of the population. The demographic and health profiles of the studied population point toward a demographic and consequently health transition of the canine population assisted by this institute. As otopatias estiveram associadas ?s ra?as Cocker Spaniel e Labrador, e as hemoparasitoses as ra?as: Rotweiller, Pastor Alem?o e Pitbull.
