O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar as expectativas e sentimentos de mulheres em situação de reprodução medicamente assistida. Participaram do estudo seis mulheres com idades entre 22 e 37 anos que realizavam tratamento para engravidar, especificamente a fertilização in vitro, no Setor de Reprodução do Serviço de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. As participantes responderam a uma entrevista de dados sócio-demográficos e uma entrevista semi-estruturada sobre as suas expectativas e sentimentos em situação de reprodução medicamente assistida. Os dados foram analisados através da análise de conteúdo qualitativa e, em termos gerais, revelaram que a infertilidade é uma experiência extremamente dolorosa para o casal, gerando sentimentos de incapacidade, frustração, vergonha, baixa auto-estima, ansiedade e tristeza. A maioria das participantes demonstrou solidão frente ao longo percurso do tratamento, reclamando pela companhia do cônjuge, que freqüentemente manteve-se afastado do processo. Quanto ao relacionamento conjugal, todas as mulheres relataram que a situação de infertilidade aproximou e melhorou o relacionamento do casal. Percebe-se ainda uma idealização da maternidade, na medida em que se imaginam como mães dedicadas e superprotetoras, desconsiderando os aspectos negativos relacionados ao desempenho deste papel. A busca pelo filho custe o que custar vem com o intuito de satisfazer desejos narcísicos dos pais. Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de se incluir profissionais de saúde mental nos serviços de atendimento a estas mulheres, pois se observa que esta experiência abala profundamente o narcisismo dos sujeitos envolvidos, evidenciando a importância dos aspectos inconscientes relacionados ao desejo de ter um filho. / The present study aimed to investigate women’s expectations and feelings in the context of assisted reproductive. Six women aged 22 to 37, who were under fertility treatment, especially in vitro fertilization, in the Reproduction Section of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of the Hospital de Clínicas in Porto Alegre. The participants answered a social demographic interview and a semistructured interview concerning their expectations and feelings in assisted reproductive. Data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis and, in general, revealed that infertility is an extremely painful experience for couples, generating feelings of being incapable, frustration, low self-esteem, anxiety and sadness. Participants showed loneliness because of the long duration of the treatment, complaining about the partner’s lack of involvement in the treatment process. As far as marital relationship is concerned, all women reported that the infertility situation improved marital relationship. An idealization of motherhood is also evident, in so far as they imagine themselves as dedicated and overprotecting mothers, not considering the negative aspects of the maternal role. The strong wish for a child fulfills parents’ narcissistic desires. The results suggest the need to include mental health professionals in the assistance services for these women, since this experience affects the narcissism of those involved, showing the importance of unconscious aspects in the desire to have a child.
