O trabalho tem por objetivo realizar uma leitura de textos do período de formação do Romantismo brasileiro a partir da categoria do sublime. O conceito de sublime, desenvolvido durante o século XVIII na Europa a partir das idéias contidas em um manual de retórica grego atribuído a Longino, fala da transcendência, da incomensurabilidade, da indeterminação e do terror, propiciando uma forma de prazer estético marcada pela negatividade. O Autor investiga como se dá a inserção dessa categoria na literatura do período apontado, a partir da sua relação com os projetos de construção da nacionalidade. Depois de retraçar o percurso do sublime na cultura do Ocidente até o Romantismo, o texto foca a questão da migração das idéias estéticas européias para a América e a relação entre literatura e construções identitárias no Brasil do século XIX. Em seguida, traça linhas gerais do sentido da transcendência no período, que apontam para a afirmação do destino grandioso do Império e suas ambições expansionistas, predominando a busca pela representação do drama da história em um cenário transcendente. Por fim, o texto realiza uma análise da obra de Gonçalves Dias à luz do conceito de sublime. / This work proposes a reading of texts from the period of the formation of Brazilian romanticism focusing on the category of the sublime. The concept of the sublime, developed in XVIII-century Europe from the ideas expressed in a greek treatise on rhetoric attributed to Longinus, tells of transcendency, unmeasurability, indetermination and terror, providing a form of aesthetical pleasure characterized by negativity. The Author investigates how this category is employed in the literature of the period, from the perspective of its relation to projects of construction of the nation. After tracing the way followed by the sublime along western culture up to Romanticism, the text focuses on the question of the migration of European aesthetical ideas to Latin America and the relation between literature and identity construction in Brazil during early XIX century. After that, it draws general lines to the meaning of the transcendence during the period, which point to the assertion of the great destiny of the Empire and its expansionist ambitions, being predominat the search for the representation of the drama of history in a transcendent scene. Finally, the work analizes the work of Gonçalves Dias focusing on the concept of the sublime.
