A presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida a partir do pressuposto que os dilemas de pais e filhos que trabalham juntos na empresa familiar, referentes ao processo de sucessão, influenciam sobremaneira a dinâmica e desenvolvimento futuro do negócio. Para tanto, inicialmente foi realizada uma revisão teórica sobre o tema e, a seguir, a coleta de dados através de um método qualitativo, por meio de entrevistas com doze sujeitos (cinco pais-sucedidos e sete filhos-sucessores) pertencentes a cinco empresas diferentes, de pequeno e médio porte. Os dados coletados indicaram e constataram os principais dilemas de pais e filhos das empresas pesquisadas, sendo que diversas partes literais das falas de sucedidos e sucessores foram transcritas textualmente para este estudo. Foi possível identificar, como um aspecto com cunho conclusivo, que os dilemas dos pais estão prioritariamente relacionados com a dualidade vida-morte, enquanto que os dilemas dos filhos estão mais centrados na questão basilar de legitimação pessoal. Percebeu-se também que os dilemas dos filhos tem potencial de causar sofrimento nos pais e vice-versa. Por derradeiro, foram expostas as limitações da presente pesquisa, assim como as sugestões para futuros trabalhos sobre o tema. / This research was elaborated considering that the dilemmas of fathers and sons whom work together at the family business, regarding the succession process, fairly influence the dynamics and future development of the company. For that, first of all was performed a theoretical overview about the subject, followed by data collection by a qualitative method, through interviews with twelve individuals (five fathers to be succeeded and seven sons to become successors), members of five different SMEs. Data collected indicated the basic dilemmas of fathers and sons of the studied companies, with several literal fragments of the interviews being transcribed in totum for this work. It was possible to identify, as a conclusive aspect of this study, that fathers‟ dilemmas are mostly related to life and death duality, while sons‟ dilemmas are for the most part centered in the basic issue of self-validation. It was possible to note also that sons‟ dilemmas are capable of hurting fathers‟ feelings and vice versa. In closing, the limitations of this research were exposed, as well as suggestions for future papers about the issue.
