Previous issue date: 2009-11-13 / This study is an investigation of the discourses which cross the English teaching classroom, focusing, more specifically, on those which enter the classroom via textbooks. Thus, the object of this research are the texts of the reading sessions of a collection of English textbooks constituted of four books designated to the second phase of elementary school in
Goiás. The aim of this analysis is to identify the themes, genres and discourses brought on these texts and the observation of their contribution to reach one of the main goals traced by the foreign language PCN, that is, the discursive engagement on the net of practices in which
they take part. The text analysis and the theoretical basis of this work are founded on the theoretical and methodological principles of Critical Discourse Analysis based on the studies of Norman Fairclough (1999, 2001, 2001a, 2001b, 2003, 2006). The selection of the textbooks from which the texts analyzed were taken was based on the collections which were mostly adopted by the English teachers in Goiânia. By the observation of the discourses and the analysis of the themes and genres of the texts it could be noticed that, when certain social spheres and view points are privileged, the Besides, it demonstrates the predominance of the study of texts with the only aim of teaching the structures of the English language. Thus, it could be noticed that textbook editors should be concerned with selecting textbooks which reflect the discourses existent inside and outside the classroom, in favor of an education for freedom / Este estudo é uma investigação sobre os discursos que permeiam a sala de aula de língua inglesa, focalizando mais especificamente aqueles discursos que adentram a sala de
aula via livro didático. Desse modo, o objeto desta pesquisa são os textos da sessão de leitura de uma coleção de livros didáticos de língua inglesa, constituída de quatro volumes
destinados à segunda fase do ensino fundamental no Estado de Goiás. O objetivo da análise destes textos é a identificação dos temas, gêneros e discursos veiculados através deles e a verificação de sua contribuição para o alcance de um dos objetivos principais propostos pelos PCN de língua estrangeira, qual seja, o engajamento discursivo dos aprendizes nas redes de práticas de que fazem parte. A análise dos textos e parte da base teórica deste trabalho fundamentam-se em princípios teóricos-metodológicos da Análise de Discurso Crítica, baseada nos estudos de Norman Fairclough (1999, 2001, 2001a, 2001b, 2003, 2006). A escolha dos livros cujos textos foram analisados foi feita mediante consulta em editoras e livrarias acerca da coleção
didática mais utilizada pelos professores de língua inglesa na cidade de Goiânia. A partir da observação dos discursos, da análise dos temas e dos gêneros dos textos, pôde-se notar que, ao privilegiarem certas esferas sociais e certos pontos de vista, os textos trazidos nos livros didáticos pouco têm contribuído para o engajamento discursivo do aprendiz, além de demonstrarem o predomínio do estudo de textos apenas com o objetivo de ensinar as estruturas da língua. Por conseguinte, notou-se a necessidade de os livros didáticos
trazerem textos que demonstrem os embates discursivos vividos dentro e fora da sala de aula, para que a educação libertadora seja favorecida
