Previous issue date: 2013 / O objetivo desta dissertação é apresentar e discutir as principais análises encontradas na literatura em semântica formal a respeito da semântica das descrições demonstrativas, dividindo essas análises em dois grupos, o das teorias referenciais e o das teorias descritivistas, defendendo, ao final, a prevalência das teorias descritivistas para a descrição dos dados das línguas naturais, em especial o PB. Parte-se do princípio de que descrições demonstrativas são termos definidos e que se aproximam sintática e semanticamente das descrições definidas, devendo ambas receberem análises similares. Entre teorias referenciais e descritivistas, conclui-se que as teorias descritivistas contemplam melhor essa aproximação entre descrições demonstrativas e descrições definidas, o que acaba lhes conferindo uma aceitação melhor enquanto descrição linguística dessas expressões. No Capítulo I, são apresentados os definidos do PB e suas principais características, mostrando como as descrições demonstrativas se enquadram tipologicamente dentro dessa classe. No Capítulo II, num primeiro momento, é apresentado o trabalho de Kaplan (1989[1977]) como a análise que inaugura questões a respeito da semântica das descrições demonstrativas que devem ser respondidas por qualquer teoria subsequente que pretenda descrever esses termos; num segundo momento, é apresentado um paralelo sintático e semântico entre descrições demonstrativas e descrições definidas, mostrando, nessa comparação, aspectos linguísticos das descrições demonstrativas que extrapolam o alcance empírico da teoria de Kaplan (1989[1977]) e que também devem ser contemplados por qualquer teoria que se objetive a propor um tratamento semântico para essas expressões. No Capítulo III, são detalhadas e analisadas as teorias de alguns dos principais autores que tratam da semântica das descrições demonstrativas na literatura recente, sendo eles Dever (2001), como representante do segmento de teorias referenciais, e Roberts (2002), Elbourne (2008) e Wolter (2006), como representantes do segmento de teorias descritivistas. Por fim, no Capítulo IV, as teorias apresentadas no Capítulo III são avaliadas e têm discutidas suas aceitações enquanto descrição linguística dos dados do PB para a semântica das descrições demonstrativas, encerrando-se o trabalho com uma seção de problemas em aberto que não têm, aparentemente, uma explicação encontrada nas teorias discutidas. <br> / Abstract : The aim of this master thesis is to show and discuss some of the main analyzes found in the literature on formal semantics about the semantics of demonstrative descriptions. These analyzes can be divided into two groups: the referential theories and the descriptive theories, arguing. We will argue that descriptive theories are the best ones to explain the data, in particular the examples in Brazilian Portuguese (BrP). We begin arguing that demonstrative descriptions are defined terms, akin syntactically and semantically to definite descriptions. Between referential and descriptivist theories, we conclude that approaches based on descriptive theories result in better descriptions of the interpretation and distribution of demonstrative and definite descriptions. In Chapter I, we present the descriptions (definite and demonstrative) of the BrP and their main features, showing how demonstrative descriptions fit typologically within the class of descriptions. In Chapter II, firstly, we introduce the theory proposed by Kaplan (1989 [1977]) as an important analysis which poses essential questions about the semantics of demonstrative descriptions that must be answered by any theory which aims at describing these terms; secondly, we present syntactic and semantic parallels between demonstrative and definite descriptions, aiming to show through this comparison linguistic aspects of demonstrative descriptions that go beyond the scope of Kaplan?s (1989 [1977]) theory that should nevertheless be addressed by any theory about the semantics of demonstrative descriptions. In Chapter III, we show in details some of the main contemporary theories about the semantics of demonstrative descriptions in the recent literature, namely Dever (2001), as a representative of referential theory, and Roberts (2002), Elbourne (2008 ) and Wolter (2006), as representatives of descriptivist theories. Finally, in Chapter IV, the theories presented in Chapter III are evaluated and discussed with regards to their success as a linguistic description of the BrP data. We conclude with a section about open problems that apparently are not yet explained by the theories discussed.
