Previous issue date: 2018-05-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). / O objetivo dessa tese é apresentar a vida e obra de José Gabriel da Costa, a quem os sócios do Centro Espírita Beneficente União Do Vegetal (CEBUDV) chamam de Mestre Gabriel. Para tanto, utiliza-se de uma abordagem decolonialista para narrar a repercussão dos exemplos do Mestre Gabriel na constituição da conduta moral e na formação ética dos sócios da UDV. A história da UDV, as transformações na vida de seus sócios, a luta pela institucionalização da religião e a defesa do direito ritualístico-religioso de comungar a Hoasca são abordados nesta tese pelos próprios atores e personagens que viveram e vivem os 56 anos de vida dessa religião. O trabalho narra ainda os acontecimentos relacionados ao processo de crescimento do CEBUDV, a chegada na região Sul do país, detalhando o perfil socioeconômico e cultural dos sócios do que se convencionou chamar de “segunda geração”. Para além de uma contribuição nativa para o campo ayahuasqueiro, a tese dialoga com os embates e problematizaçoes que giram em torno do uso da Hoasca/Ayahuasca. O processo de institucionalização é analisado a partir de dois momentos distintos, mas complementares. O primeiro momento é compreendido entre os anos de 1967 e 1971, com a formação da sociedade religiosa por Mestre Gabriel e seus primeiros discípulos em Porto Velho; já o segundo momento é dado entre os anos de 1984 e 2010, quando os mestres da segunda geração da UDV, com apoio e supervisão dos mestres formados pelo Mestre Gabriel, ficaram à frente da luta pela legalização e regulamentação do direito ritualístico-religioso de comungar a Hoasca. As implicações dessa conquista para o processo de institucionalização dessa religião tanto no âmbito interno, com a reestruturação administrativa e a criação de departamentos, quanto no âmbito externo com o processo de diálogo construído com as autoridades do país são narradas pelos agentes desse processo. Sustenta-se que a chave para se compreender o sucesso dessa empreitada está na forma responsável e segura com a qual essa religião vem conduzindo a utilização do chá Hoasca dentro de um contexto ritualístico religioso. / The purpose of this text is to present the life and work of José Gabriel da Costa, to whom the partners of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União Do Vegetal (CEBUDV) call Master Gabriel. For that, a decolonialist methodology is used to narrate the repercussion of the examples of Master Gabriel in the constitution of the moral conduct and in the ethical formation of the members of the UDV. The UDV history, the transformations in the lives of its members, the struggle for the institutionalization of religion and the defense of the ritualreligious right to commune Hoasca is addressed in this thesis by the actors and characters who lived and keep living the 56 years of this religion's life. The paper also tells the events related to the process of growth of CEBUDV, the arrival in the southern region of the country, detailing the socioeconomic and cultural profile of the partners of what is known as the second generation. In addition to a native contribution to the ayahuasca field, the thesis dialogues with the clashes and problematizations that revolve around the use of Hoasca/Ayahuasca. The process of institutionalization is analyzed from two distinct but complementary moments. The first moment is understood between the years of 1967 to 1971, with the formation of the religious society by Master Gabriel and his first disciples in Porto Velho; and the second moment is given between the years 1984 to 2010, when the masters of the second generation of the UDV, with support and supervision of the masters formed by Master Gabriel, were at the forefront of the struggle for legalization and regulation of the ritual-religious right to commune Hoasca. The implications of this achievement for the process of institutionalizing this religion both internally, with administrative restructuring and the creation of departments, as well as in the external context with the process of dialogue built with the authorities of the country are narrated by the agents of this process. It is argued that the key to understanding the success of this endeavor lies in the responsible and secure manner in which this religion has led to the use of Hoasca tea within a religious ritual context. / L’objectif du présent texte est de présenter la vie et l'œuvre de José Gabriel da Costa, a qui les associés du Centre Spirite de Bienfaisance União do Vegetal (CSBUDV) appellent Mestre Gabriel. Pour cela, nous avons utilisés un abordage décolonialiste afin de raconter la répercussion des exemples du Mestre Gabriel dans la constitution de la conduite morale et dans la formation étique des associés de l’UDV. L’histoire de l’UDV, les transformations dans la vie de ses associés, la lute pour l’institutionnalisation de la réligion et pour le droit ritualiste-religieux de communion de l’Hoasca, sont approchés dans la présente thèse par les propres acteurs et personnages qui ont vécu et qui vivent toujours les 56 ans de vie de cette religion. Le présent travail traite encore les événements liés au processus d’expansion du CSBUDV, son arrivé dans la région Sud du pays, en détaillant le profil socioéconomique et culturel des ces membres qu'on a convenu appeler la «deuxième génération». Au-delà d'une contribution native au domaine ayahuasqueiro, la thèse dialogue avec les luttes et les problématisations autour de l’utilisation de l’Hoasca/Ayahuasca. Le processus d’institutionnalisation est analysé à partir de deux moments distincts, mais complémentaires. Le premier moment est compris entre les années 1967 et 1971, avec la formation de la société religieuse par le Mestre Gabriel et ses premières disciples à Porto Velho; le deuxième moment est compris entre les années 1984 et 2010, lorsque les maîtres de la deuxième génération de l’UDV, avec de soutien et la supervision des maîtres formés par Mestre Gabriel, se sont chargés de la lutte pour la légalisation et la réglementation du droit ritualiste-religieux de communier l’Hoasca. Les implications de cette conquête dans le processus d’institutionnalisation de cette religion, tant du point de vue interne, avec la restructuration administrative et la création de départements, que du point de vue externe, avec le processus de dialogue construit avec les autorités du pays, sont narrés pas les agents de ce processus. Nous soutenons (?) que la clé pour comprendre le succès de cette entreprise réside dans la manière responsable et sécurisé avec laquelle cette religion conduit l’utilisation du thé Hoasca dans un contexte ritualiste-religieux.
