Previous issue date: 2009-05 / O presente estudo trata das concepções apiakás sobre a mudança histórica e articula as categorias sociais nativas à atual organização sociopolítica e à formulação da identidade étnica. Os apiakás sofreram os efeitos devastadores da frente da borracha na região dos rios formadores do Tapajós, mas conseguiram se restabelecer como povo diferenciado. A categoria “misturados”, central para a auto-imagem apiaká, articula-se à formação comunitária contemporânea e constitui o princípio organizativo que impulsiona a luta do povo por fazer conhecer sua história e por fazer respeitar seus direitos. A relação com o território estrutura a memória coletiva e fornece uma perspectiva de futuro. A apreensão dos contornos da historicidade apiaká e a análise da organização sociopolítica atual revelam a intensidade da resiliência que eles partilham com a maioria dos povos indígenas da América Latina. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This is a study of the Apiaká Indians of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It focuses on their conceptions of historical change and examines how their social categories articulate with their present sociopolitical organization and with the shaping of their ethnic identity. Although the Apiaká suffered the devastating effects of the rubber boom in the region of the Tapajós River basin, they have succeeded in maintaining their distinctiveness as a people. The category of “mixed people” is central to Apiaká self perception and informs their contemporary community life. It is also the thrusting principle behind their efforts to make their history known and their rights respected. Their relationship to territory frames both their collective memories and future perspectives. To grasp Apiaká historicity and present-day sociopolitical organization is to reveal the intensity of the resilience they share with most Indigenous peoples in Latin America.
