Previous issue date: 1999 / Resumo: A presente tese examina a minissérie Grande sertão: veredas, da Rede Globo de televisão, realizada em 1985 com base no livro homônimo de João Guimarães ROSA(1956/1986). Minha hipótese é de que o formato escolhido e sua função de prestígio na grade de programação da emissora foram os principais parâmetros utilizados na transformação do romance em ficção televisiva. Tradicionalmente, trabalhos com temas análogos tendem a privilegiar as diferenças de
linguagem, pressupondo um original estável e potencialmente apreensível em sua "essência". Não foi esse o caminho trilhado em minha pesquisa, cujas principais referências teóricas são as noções de "reescritura" (LEFEVERE1,992a-b), "transformação regulada" (DERRIDA1972/1975) e "apropriação" (ARRoJO, 1993e). De forma complementar, utilizei ainda as noções de "comunidade interpretativa" (FISH, 1980) e "função-autor" (FOUCAULT,1969/1983). Como suporte empírico,
recorri a um estudo da recepção do romance e da minissérie na crítica especializada e jomalística, aliado a uma análise de ambos os textos. No caso da produção televisiva, houve recurso à sinopse, ao roteiro e à edição final do programa. O fio condutor dessa "dupla leitura" (do romance e da minissérie) foi a aspiração de "fidelidade ao livro" propalada pela Globo e amplamente repercutida na mídia. Os elementos arrolados na pesquisa permitem a conclusão de que tal "fidelidade"
diz antes respeito a determinadas tradições críticas e sobretudo aos próprios desígnios da televisão. De todo modo, o contato do enorme público televisivo com o Grande sertão: veredas representa uma significativa "sobrevida" do romance, no sentido de BENJAMIN(1923/1972), não em outra língua ou cultura, mas em outro sistema textual, de crescente interesse para os estudos da tradução / Abstract: This thesis focuses on the television program Grande sertão: veredas, produced by the Brazilian network Globo in 1985, based on the homonymous book by João Guimarães ROSA(1956/1986). My hypothesis is that the main criteria used in the transformation of the novel into a piece of fiction for television were the chosen format and its prestige function within the network program schedule. Traditionally, academic investigation of similar themes tends to insist on the different
artistic languages, assuming the original work to be stable and potentialIy graspable in its "essence". This was not the chosen path in my research, whose main theoretical references are the notions of "rewriting" (LEFEVERE,1992a-b), "regulated transformation" (DERRIDA1972/1975) and "appropriation" (ARROJO, 1993e). Additionally, I also used the notions of "interpretative community" (FISH,1980) and "author-function" (FOUCAULT1,969/1983). The empirical support was given through a study of the way the novel and the television program were received by the critics and in the midia, together with a dose reading of both texts. In the case of the television production, I had access to the synopsis, the script and the final version of the program. My "double reading" (of both novel and television production) was inspired by the daim to "fidelity to the
original work" sustained by the television network and given prominence in the midia. The results of the research lead to the conclusion that the achieved "fidelity" is more closely related to certain critic traditions, but above alI to the interests of the network itself. Nevertheless, the contact of an enormous television public with Rosa's novel amounts to an "afterlife" of the original, in BENJAMINs '(1923/1972) terms, not in another language or culture, but in another textual system of increasing interest for translation studies / Doutorado / Tradução / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada
