Previous issue date: 1998 / Resumo: Esta dissertação apresenta uma descrição fonética e fonológica da língua Shanenawá, pertencente à família Pano, que é falada por um povo localizado às margens do rio Envira, no município de Feijó, Estado do Acre, Brasil.
O trabalho está estruturado em três partes básicas, além de dois apêndices e da bibliografia. Os dois apêndices contêm um vocabulário básico e mapas para a localização da área Shanenawá. A primeira parte é dedicada a informações gerais sobre o povo e a língua Shanenawá e a uma discussão sobre a classificação das línguas da família Pano. Inclui-se ainda nesta parte, a metodologia usada no trabalho de campo para a coleta dos dados utilizados nessa dissertação. A segunda parte trata da descrição fonética dos sons da língua e da análise fonêmica desses sons, a qual foi feita segundo os aspectos de contraste, variação livre e distribuição complementar. A terceira parte focaliza a fonologia da língua. Desta feita, as análises são efetuadas à luz de teorias mais atuais, ou seja, a partir das fonologias não-lineares ou autossegmentais. Esta parte aborda a estrutura silábica, o acento e os principais processos fonológicos como: a ocorrência dos glides labial [w] e palatal [j] em posições de Onset e Coda; a assimilação de consoantes nasais em posição de Coda; a nasal idade das vogais e a palatalização de consoantes coronais quando estas figuram em ambientes de vogais anteriores e do glide palatal [j]. / Abstract: This dissertation describes the phonetics and phonology of Shanenawá, an Indian Language of Pano family. This language is spoken by people located alongside of the Envira ri ver, at the municipal district ofFeijó, State of Acre, Brazil.
The dissertation is divided in three main parts, two appendixes with a basic
vocabulary, maps locating Shanenawá region and the bibliography.
The first part of the dissertation includes general information about the people, the Shanenawá language, and some discussion relating to the state of linguistics cIassification
of the languages belonging to the Pano family. The field work and the methodology of elicitation of the data is mentioned in this part, too.
The second part concerns with the description of the phones and the phonemic analysis In this part we use traditional concepts such as opposition, ftee variation and complementary distribution (Pike, 1947; Kindell, 1981).
In the third part of the dissertation, we analyse some phonological processes following the more recent theories, i.e. Non-linear or Autosegmental phonology. Thus, this part covers'the syllable structure, stress, and the phonetic and phonological behaviour ofthe approximants [w] and m which occur in Onset and Coda position. We also discuss, in this part, the assimilation of the nasal consonants in Coda position to the following obstruents in Onset position. Finally, we finished our work describing the nasalization of vowels and the coronal palatalization of the phone /s/ in the environment following coro na I segments [i] and [j] / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística
