Previous issue date: 1995 / Resumo: Esta tese discute a caracterização do português do Brasil (PB) quanto a duas propriedades das "línguas pro-drop": possibilidade de sujeito nulo e possibilidade de ORDEM Verbo-Sujeito. Estudos recentes têm defendido, com base em análises Variacionistas, que o PB teria perdido tais propriedades, mais exatamente, o caráter pro-drop. Diferentes análises atribuídas a esses
fenômenos suscitam questões que apontam para a possibilidade de serem reinterpretados nos moldes da Teoria no seu estágio atual.
Partindo desses fatos, esta tese argumenta em favor desta hipótese: o PB caracteriza-se por continuar apresentando a possibilidade
de sujeito nulo e não ,apresentar a ORDEM V-S. Mostra que a referida proposta de mudança não se sustenta diante do modelo
de Princípios e Parâmetros e de outras análises Variacionistas. Busca explicar a possibilidade de sujeito nulo (expletivo e referencial,
no PB: a) aponta questões quanto ao papel de Agr em relação à possibilidade de sujeito nulo e à caracterização de Agr, no âmbito da TRL; b) reformula a Teoria de pro (RIZZI:1986), redefinindo licenciamento formal (adotandq noções de checagem e traços (cf. CHOMSKY:1995), identificação (assumindo que tal processo envolve traços- e o traço Referência) e FLEXÃO RICA - a característica pro-drop, exibida pelo PB (assumindo a distinção pessoa/não-pessoa (cf. BENVENISTE:1988)). Por fim, com base em CHOMSKY(1995), analisa a ORDEM V-S no PB, que consiste na ocorrência de DP[-Acus] pós-verbal - propõe que esse DP é um OBJETO NOMINATIVO, que figura em sentenças com SVO e, não, ORDEM V-S / Abstract: This dissertation discusses the characterization of Brazilian portuguese (BP) in terms of two languages, namely the possibili ty ofnull-subjects and the possibility of V-S order. Recent studies have argued, on the basis of variationist analyses, that BP has lost these two properties or, more specifically, its pro-drop character. Different analyses for these phenomena, on the other hand, have raised some issues which suggest their reinterpretation, cast in terms of the current stage og Generative Theory.
Proceeding from these facts, this dissertation argues in favour of the following hypothesis: BP can be characterized as presenting the possibility of null-subjects while rejecting V-S order. It shows that the ab~ve mentioned proposal of change cannot be maintained when faced with the PrincipIes & Parameters model and with other variationist analyses. Concerning the possibility of null-subjects (either expletive or referential) in BP this dissertation a) points to some aspects related to the role of Agr in relation to the possibility of null-subjects and the characterization of Agr in terms of GB theory; b) reformulates the pro-Theory (RIZZI: 1986), by redefining formal licensing (by adopting the notions of checkina and features (cf. CHOMSKY: 1995)), identification (by assuming that this process involves features and the feature Reference) and Rich Inflection - the pro-drop characteristic exhibited by BP (by assuming the person/-non-person distinction (cf. BENVENISTE: 1988)). Finally, on the basis of CHOMSKY (1995), this dissertation analyses the V-S order in BP, which consists of the occurence of post-verbal [-ACUSj DP, and proposes that this DP is a NOMINATIVE OBJECT, which appears in SVO sentences, and not in the V-S order / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências
