Previous issue date: 1999 / Resumo: Este trabalho analisa os estágios iniciais de aquisição do português brasileiro como segunda língua, por um adulto falante do chinês que teve o inglês como segunda língua. O fenômeno sintático adotado para a realização desse estudo foi o Parâmetro do Sujeito Nulo. Procurou-se responder as questões: Há algum tipo de interferência do inglês para a aquisição do PB no que se refere ao parâmetro pro-drop? Existe transferência do chinês para o PB? Ou seja, o estado inicial de aquisição do PB, como L2, por Johnny deve ser considerado como o estado final de sua LI? Ou a GU seria o estado inicial para a aquisição do PB? Supondo que sujeito nulo define pelo menos dois subtipos de línguas, o que tem o sujeito identificado pela concordância e o que o identifica pelo tópico, levantou-se a hipótese de que, inicialmente, o sujeito dessa pesquisa vai apresentar sujeito nulo com concordância unipessoal, como no chinês, e, só posteriormente, com base nos dados do input, vai remarcar o parâmetro para o pro-drop do português brasileiro, a partir da aquisição da concordância dessa língua. A análise dos dados mostra uma primeira fase em que o nulo aparece apenas como sujeito de verbo de terceira pessoa não-marcada, com referência de primeira, segunda ou terceira pessoa, e uma segunda fase que evidencia a presença do sujeito nulo para verbo marcado em primeira pessoa. Verificou-se que Johnny não está tomando como base, para a aquisição do PB, o parâmetro do inglês já que essa língua não permite sujeitos nulos. Quanto à segunda questão, concluiu-se que não se pode decidir se o aprendiz está utilizando a GU como opção "default", ou sua LI, o chinês, já que se assumiu que o pro-drop do chinês é o próprio "default" / Abstract: This study analyses the initial stages of the acquisition of Brazilian Portuguese as a second language (BPL2) by a Chinese-speaking adult, who also speaks English. The syntactic phenomenon adopted for the carrying on of this study was the Null Subject Parameter. There was an attempt to answer the following questions: Is there any type of interference of English on the acquisition of BP, as far as the pro-drop parameter is concerned? Is there any "transfer" from Chinese into BP? That is, should the initial stage of the acquisition of BPL2 by Johnny be considered as the final stage of his LI? Or would UG be the initial stage towards the acquisition of BP? Supposing that null subject defines at least two sub-types of languages, the one where the subject is identified by agreement and the one where the subject is identified by the topic, we hypothesized that the subject of this research will present null subject with a one-person agreement, as in Chinese, and, only later, based upon input data, he will set the parameter for the pro-drop of Brazilian Portuguese. The data analysis shows a first stage in which the null subject only appears as a verb subject of a non-marked third person, with reference to the first, second and third persons, and a second stage which makes evident the presence of the null subj ect of a verb marked in the first person. It was verified that Johnny is not considering English as the basis for the acquisition of BP, since English does not allow for null subjects. As for the second issue, we concluded that one can not decide whether the learner is utilizing the UG as a default option, or his LI (Chinese) , since we have assumed that the Chinese pro-drop is the very default / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística
