Previous issue date: 1994 / Resumo: Este trabalho tem por objetivo discorrer sobre as propostas da psiquiatria higiênica brasileira das décadas de 20 e 30, notadamente de sua instituição mais expressiva no período que foi a Liga Brasileira de Higiene Mental (LBHM), criada em 1923.
Tomando por eixo de análise os desdobramentos teóricos e práticos dessa psiquiatria, que consagrava o princípio da prevenção e elegia a eugenia e higiene mental como referentes conceituais básicos, buscou-se esclarecer aspectos importantes do seu novo e ambicioso projeto de intervenção social que, de forma geral, se vinculava ao tema tão caro à época da "regeneração" e/ou "construção" nacional.
Como para alcançar tal intuito de regenerar a nacionalidade exigia que se enfrentasse a questão da composição racial do brasileiro, os psiquiatras e médicos agrupados em torno da Liga Brasileira de Higiene Mental se valeram extensamente de proposições eugênicas, vistas, pois, como melhor meio de racionalizar esse processo. / Abstract: This work has the objective of discoursing the proposals of the Brazilian hygiene psychiatry during the decades of the 20's and 30's, specially its most important institution, the Brazilian League of Mental Hygiene (LBHM), founded in 1923.
Using as axis of analyses the theorical and practical expansion of this psychiatry that rendered the principal of prevention and had elected the eugenic and mental hygiene as basic concepts of reference, this work has the intention of enlightening important
Aspects of its new and ambitious project of social interference which, in a general sense,
was linked to the 50 highly esteemed theme of that time: the national "regeneration" and/or "construction".
To achieve such aim of regenerating the nationality, required that one should face the problem of racial mixture of the Brazilian population, 50 psychiatrists and doctors gathered in the Brazilian League of Mental Hygiene, were supported greatly on the eugenic proposal, due to the fact that it became the best form of rationalizing this process. / Mestrado / Mestre em História
