Previous issue date: 2006 / Resumo: Esta dissertação se propõe a repensar a importância da Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro para a monarquia luso-brasileira durante o período em que D. João VI residiu no Brasil (1808 -1821). A análise parte de uma perspectiva histórica transoceânica já que nesses anos o jornal circulou em ambos os lados do Atlântico. Uma vez que a Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro é considerada pela historiografia brasileira o marco da introdução da imprensa no país, pretendemos investigar a concepção de imprensa desse periódico e assim compreendermos a qual tradição de imprensa esse jornal estava vinculado. Para tanto, analisaremos os sentidos intrínsecos ao discurso do redator da folha, o papel do leitor na produção e recepção da notícia e a relação existente entre concepção de imprensa e as questões políticas vigentes no universo público no período joanino / Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to reexamine the importance of the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro for the Luso-Brazilian monarchy during the years of D. Joao VI's residence in Brazil (1808-1821). The approach is transatlantic, in keeping with the fact that the newspaper was read on both sides of the Atlantic throughout this period. Because the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro is considered by Brazilian historians to be the country's first newspaper, the dissertation investigates how it was thought of at the time and what this tells us about the journalistic tradition to which it belonged. To this end we identify what the paper's editorials tell us about the period, the role of the readers in the production and reception of the news, and the relationship between the understanding of the newspaper's role and the principal political issues that were publicly debated during D.
