Previous issue date: 1997 / Resumo: "Os sons do Pitiguari Cyclarhisgujanensis" é uma pesquisa detalhada sobre o comportamento sonoro deste pássaro (Aves, Passeriformes, Oscines, Vireonidae). Para tanto, realizei observações em campo sobre a variedade de cantos que o Pitiguari emite, descobrindo que a fêmea tem seu próprio canto e o macho apresenta oito cantos diferentes. Relacionei essa variedade de cantos com outras formas de comportamentos associados e busquei descobrir a função de cada um deles para a espécie. Em laboratório, padronizei-os de acordo com a estrutura das frases formadas pelos diferentes sons que o pássaro emite. Assim, os cantos do macho foram padronizados em seis tipos diferentes. Uma outra parte do estudo consistiu em "descontextualizar" os sons emitidos pelo Pitiguari observando-os de outras formas. Assim, utilizei-me dos sonogramas, representação dos sons através de um gráfico freqüência (Hz) x tempo (ms), para realizar uma análise com recursos da linguagem musical. Para tanto, fiz uma leitura da estruturação das frases de cada canto e dos sons" descontextualizados". Realizei também, uma leitura auditiva dos mesmos, valendo-me da percepção auditiva destes como objetos sonoros, com o objetivo de descobrir se existe uma correlação entre as análises bioacústica, musical e auditiva dos sons do Pitiguari. Concluindo, este estudo atingiu os seguintes objetivos: acrescentar novas formas de análise dos sons naturais de uma espécie de ave, mostrar a importância da comunicação sonora como forma de comportamento, e contribuir com dados científicos na preservação das espécies da avifauna brasileira / Abstract: "The sounds of the Pitiguari Cyclarhis gujanensis" is a detailed research about the sound behavior of this species of bird, the Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Passeriformes, Oscines, Vireonidae). For this research, I made field observations on the variety of songs emitted by the Rufous-browed Peppershrike or "Pitiguari", finding out that the female has its own song and that the male has eight different songs. I made a relation with other forms of associated behavior and searched to find out the function of each song for this specie. In the laboratory, I measured and standardized the various songs according to the structure of the phrases formed by the different songs emitted by the bird. Thus, the songs of the male were standardized in six different types. Another part of the study consisted to look "out of context" at the sounds emitted by the bird in order to observe them in other ways. Thus, I used the sonograms, representations of the sounds through a ftequency (Hz) x time (ms) graphic, to do an analysis using the resources of the musicallanguage. For that, I studied the structure of the phrases of each song and the "discontextualized" sounds. I also did an aural study of the sounds, using my acoustic perception of them, as sonorous objects, with the objective to find out if there is a correlation between the bioacoustic, musical and aural analysis of the sounds of the Rufous-browed Peppershrike. To conclude, this study attained the following objectives: to add new forms of analysis of the natural sounds of a species of bird, to show the importance of the sound communication as a form ofbehavior, and to contribute with scientificdata for the preservation of the species of the Brazilian avifauna / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios
