Previous issue date: 2003 / Resumo: A necessidade de conhecer a situação do aleitamento matemo no município de São João da Boa Vista motivou esta pesquisa. Desde 1997 o incentivo ao aleitamento matemo constituiu uma das prioridades do Departamento Municipal de Saúde e, para sua implementação, foi criado o "Projeto de Atendimento Domiciliar ao Recém-Nascido -Projeto Vida", dentro do "Programa de Assistência Integral à Saúde da Criança". Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo contribuir para a avaliação do Projeto Vida, enquanto instrumento de política pública estimuladora do aleitamento matemo exclusivo, no município de São João da Boa Vista. O universo da pesquisa abrangeu 1.270 crianças menores de 6 meses. Os dados foram extraídos dos questionários aplicados na visita domiciliar, realizada dentro do Projeto Vida, e das pesquisas "Avaliação das Práticas Alimentares em Crianças Menores de Um Ano em Dia Nacional de Multivacinação", ocorridas no município em 1999, 2000 e 2002. Foi realizado um estudo seccional e, a partir dele, um estudo caso-controle. Duas leituras podem ser realizadas a partir dos resultados obtidos. Na primeira é possível identificar que, da população analisada, 45,2% estavam em aleitamento materno, 27,2% em aleitamento matemo exclusivo e 27,6% haviam sido desmamadas. Na segunda, ao se comparar a distnouição dos bebês por faixa etária, percebe-se ter ocorrido uma diminuição importante da alimentação artificial para bebês de Oa 2 meses e aumento do aleitamento exclusivo. O desmame está presente, influenciado pela introdução precoce de alimentos, trabalho matemo, idade da mãe, paridade e escolaridade materna. Foi possível, com este estudo, colher evidências que sugerem a importância da política pública municipal no incentivo ao aleitamento materno. Desde a implantação do Projeto Vida houve um aumento da prevalência do aleitamento matemo exclusivo / Abstract: The need to know the breast feeding situation in São João da Boa Vista was the main motivating factor for this research. Since 1997 the incentive to breast feeding has been one ofthe priorities ofthe city's Health Department and, for its implementation, the "Newbom Home Care Project - Life Project", part of the "Integral Assistance Program to children's Health" was created. Therefore, the present study aims to make a avaliacion of the Life Project as an instrument of public policies for stimulating the exclusive breast feeding in São João da Boa Vista, and the factors related to early weaning. The universe of the research comprised 1270 children under the age of 6 months. The data was extracted from the forms used in the home visit, which took place in the Life Project, and from the "Evaluation of the Feeding Practices in Children under one year of age on the National Multi-vaccination Day" researches, which were done in 1999, 2000, and 2002 in the city. A sectional study and a following control case study based on it were done. Two considerations can be taken from the obtained results. In the first one it is possible to identi:fytOOt45,2% of the population analyzed were in breast feeding, 27,2% in exclusive breast feedijlg and 27,6% were weaned. In the second, an important decrease in the bottle feeding of babies from Oto 2 years old, and an increase of the exclusive breast feeding is perceived through the comparison of the baby distribution per age. The weaning is present, induced by the early introduction of solid food, mother's retuming to work, parity and mother' s education. Whit this is possibles sugeri the importance of municipal public policies ofhealth to incentive the breast feeding .
