We evaluated 41 children (maximum age 16 years old) with the diagnosis of epilepsy due to NC, followed at the Child Neurology Unit of UNICAMP. Five patients presented only single seizures. Eight developed epilepsy afier intracranial hypertension and the remain 28 presented at least two years of epilepsy and normal neurological exam. This Iast group (group NC) was compared to 32 patients with benign partial epilepsy (group EB). The following aspects of the epileptic manifestation were analyzed: epidemiological, clinical, therapeutical and prognostico The presentation of the epileptic picture (type, duration, ftequency of seizures, c1uster, status epilepticus, postictal deficit) was similar in the two groups. The statistically significant data found in group NC were: duration of the epilepsy; duration of the treatment; number of antiepileptic drugs; politherapy; utilization of maximum tolerated doses; number of seizures and recurrence . Control EEG persisted abnormal more :&equendyin the group NC. Our findings suggest
that childhood neurocysticercosis epilepsy has similar clínical presentation to the benign epilepsy, however the evolution is different in relation to the therapeutic handling and with reIationship to the recurrence afier interruption of the treatment. These 28 patientes course was also compared to the eight patients with hipertensive form (group B). There were differences in relation to the indexes of status epilepticus, higher in the group B and to the EEG of the admission that was abnormal in alI the patients with hipertensive form. In the group NC, the evaluation of the influence of the number of lesions has neither revealed
significantdifferencesnor in reIation to stage of the parasite / Doutorado / Neurologia / Doutor em Ciências Médicas
