Previous issue date: 1997 / Resumo: O estudo da biologia floral e sistema de reprodução de Ferdinandusa speciosa foi realizado durante os meses de março a agosto de 1996 em Uberlândia, MG. Ferdinandusa speciosa é uma arvoreta que ocorre em margens alagadas de matas de galeria. As populações estudadas floresceram de março a julho, apresentando pulsos de emissão de inflorescências que conferiram uma certa assincronia de floração tanto individual quanto populacional. As flores estão dispostas em inflorescências cimosas, possuem corola vermelha, tubular, levemente curvada, medindo cerca de 4,7 cm de comprimento. São protândl1cas, têm duração de dois dias e a oferta de pólen precede em um dia a receptividade estigmática. Tanto o início da antese quanto a abertura dos lábios estigmáticos ocorrem no crepúsculo. O néctar está disponíveis nas fases masculina e feminina, apresentando maior concentração de açúcares na fase masculina. Ferdinandusa speciosa é uma espécie autocompatível, não apolítica e com baixa produção de frutos em condições naturais. Não houve diferença significativa entre a produção de frutos formados por autopolinização e polinização cruzada, e os tubos políticos em pistilos destes expel1melltos atingiram a base do ovário 24 horas após a polinização. As sementes formadas por polinização cruzada são maiores, com maior massa e taxa de germinação maior do que as formadas por autopolinização. Este resultado indica que, embora a espécie seja autocompatível, a polinização cruzada é vantajosa. Duas espécies de beija-flor polinizam as flores de F. speciosa: Chlorostilbon aureoventris e Phaethornis pretrei / Abstract: A study of the floral biology and breeding system of Ferdinandusa speciosa Pohl (Rubiaeeae) was carried out from Mareh to August of 1996 ill Uberlândia, MG, and southeastern Brazil. Ferdinandusa speciosa is a shim that occurs in swampy edges of gallery forests. The populations flowered from Mareh to July, and presented asyncrony ill the individual and population levels. The flowers are arranged in cymose inflorescences, are red, slightly curved and have approximately 4.7 cm ill lel1ght. The flowers are protandrous, last for two days and the pollen is available one day before the stigma becomes receptive. The beginning of an thesis aud the opening of the stigmatize lips occur at dusk. The nectar is secreted boyh during the male aud female phase. Ferdinandusa speciosa is a self-compatible, non-appositive species, with low fruit production under natural conditions. No differences were found between fh1Ít set of self- aud cross-pollinated flowers, and the pollen tubes in pistils of these treatments reached the base of the style 24 hours after pollinations. The seeds formed by cross pollinations are bigger, heavier and show a higher germination rate than those formed by cross-pollination. This result indicates that, although the species is self-compatible, eross-pollil1ation is advantageous. The flowers are visited and pollinated by two hummingbird species, Chlorostilbon aureoventris and Phaethornis pretrei / Mestrado / Biologia Vegetal / Mestre em Ciências Biológicas
