Previous issue date: 1991 / Resumo: Fatores fisicos são reconhecidamente importantes como limitantes para a distribuição de espécies em mesolitoral de costões rochosos. Este trabalho investigou a importância da variação de salinidade e da dessecação na distribuição de duas espécies de gastrópodos herbivoros Acmaea subrugosa e Fissurella clenchi no estuário do Rio Verde, na Estação Ecológica de Juréia-Itatins. Examinou-se também a influencia destes fatores na distribuição das classes etárias desses moluscos ao longo dos gradientes estuarino (de salinidade) e vertical (de dessecação) e as possiveis interações intra e intererpecificas das populações. Os testes de tolerância à dessecação e à variação de salinidade mostraram que E. clenchi é menos resistente a esses fatores, provavelmente devido à sua conformação morfológica, o que parece limitar esta espécie ao mesolitoral inferior. Acmaea subrugosa apresenta uma ampla distribuição ao longo dos dois gradientes. Individuos de Acmaea com tamanhos diferentes ocupam diferentes locais do mesolitoral. Nas áreas marginais de sua distribuição, na foz do rio e no mesolitoral superior, houve uma maior concentração de individuos grandes (> 5.0 mm de comprimento), enquanto nas áreas centrais, distantes da foz e no mesolitoral inferior, a maioria dos individuos eram de pequeno porte «5.0 mm de comprimento). Estes padrões de distribuição são discutidos e relacionados às adaptações dos herbivoros e a possiveis interações competitivas intra e interespecificas / Abstract: Physical factors are recognized as limitants for the distribution of species inhabiting intertidal rocky shores. This survey investigated the importance of the variation of salinity and desiccationon the distribution of two species of herbivorous gastropods Acmaea subrugosa and Eissurella clenchi at the Rio Verde estuary, in the Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station, southeastern Brazil. The influence of these factors on the distribution of age classes along the estuarine and desiccation gradients as well as possible intra and interespecfic interactions were also investigated. Tests on tolerance to desiccation and salinity variation showed that probably due to its morphological configuration, E. clenchi was less resistant to these factors, which seen to limit the occurrence of Fissurella to the low intertidal zone. Acmaea subrugosa showed a wide distribution along both gradients with distinct patterns of spatial distribution associated with age classes. In the marginal areas of its distribution, at the mouth of the river and at the high intertidal zones, there was a higher concentration of the biggest individuaIs (more than 5.0 mm of length), while in the central areas, away from the mouth of the river and at the low intertidal zone, the majority of the individuals belonged to smaller classes (less than 5.0 mm of length).
