Previous issue date: 2013-12-03 / Information Technology (IT) is becoming one of the most frequently used resources in hospital institutions, giving rise to a dependency relation to its resources and services, with reflects on the performance of its role in the institutions. In view of this context, this research tried to perceive the strategic role of Information Technology (IT), in the sphere of the use of IT resources and services in the health field, supported by IT Governance. For such a purpose, it was initially conducted a bibliographic study through searching in the specialized literature, in order to identify IT evolution at hospitals, understanding difficulties in IT use, getting to know the incentives and policies guiding IT actions in the health
field and understanding the concepts addressed by IT Governance in the identification of the IT strategic role in the enterprises. In a second step, the survey method was applied in an exploratory fashion, where the IT strategic role in
hospitals was investigated in view of the current reality, by means of a questionnaire based on concepts addressed by IT Governance. The achieved results allowed diagnosing the key factors identifying the IT strategic role at hospitals, and even to perceive, through the result validation process, that IT
shows relevant characteristics helping to understand its strategic role at hospital institutions, nevertheless, some points of improvement are to be shaped, in search of a continuous perfection for managing and consolidating this role. / A Tecnologia da Informa??o (TI) vem se tornando um dos recursos mais utilizados nas institui??es hospitalares, desencadeando uma rela??o de depend?ncia aos seus recursos e servi?os, e refletindo no desempenho do seu papel nas institui??es. Diante deste contexto, esta pesquisa buscou apreender o papel estrat?gico da Tecnologia da Informa??o (TI), perante o cen?rio da utiliza??o dos recursos e servi?os de TI na ?rea da sa?de apoiada pela Governan?a de TI. Para tal, foi realizado inicialmente um estudo bibliogr?fico atrav?s de buscas na literatura especializada com o objetivo de identificar a evolu??o da TI nos hospitais, apreender as dificuldades em rela??o uso da TI, compreender os incentivos e pol?ticas que norteiam as a??es de TI na ?rea da sa?de, e
entender os conceitos tratados pela Governan?a de TI na identifica??o do papel estrat?gico da TI nas empresas. Num segundo momento foi aplicado o m?todo survey de forma explorat?ria, onde se procurou investigar o papel estrat?gico da TI nos hospitais diante da realidade atual, por meio de um question?rio baseado nos conceitos tratados pela Governan?a de TI. Os resultados permitiram diagnosticar a exist?ncia dos principais fatores que identificam o papel estrat?gico da TI nos hospitais, e ainda perceber atrav?s do procedimento de valida??o dos resultados que a TI apresenta caracter?sticas
relevantes que levam a entender o seu papel estrat?gico nas institui??es hospitalares, entretanto, alguns pontos de melhoria devem ser trabalhados buscando o aperfei?oamento cont?nuo da gest?o e da consolida??o deste papel.
