Previous issue date: 2007-12-05 / The following work approaches, under multiple aspects, the concept of reading, emphasizing the importance of the related acquisition processes, such as literacy and the writing learning, as wells as the factors directly or indirectly included in the construction of the reading interest at school. It presents a chronology of the writing history and, therefore, of the reading in the world, in Brazil and at school, emphasizing the struggle of low income classes for the right of knowledge. Shows the situation of reading at public city and state schools during Basic Education I and II in the outskirts of the city of São Paulo, aiming at justifying the reading crisis on education. It checks the selection criteria of school and reading support books, as well as its distribution and access by the students. Analyses the poll developed on four different public schools in relation to the acquisition and preservation of the reading habit. Evaluates and concludes that the poor construction of the reading interest is a problem caused by the lack of knowledge by the reader and the detachment of the social practices, by the school. / O trabalho a seguir aborda o conceito de leitura sob diferentes aspectos, destacando a importância dos processos que abrangem sua aquisição, como a alfabetização e o letramento, bem como os fatores envolvidos, direta ou indiretamente, na construção do interesse pela leitura na escola. Apresenta um histórico da criação da escrita e, conseqüentemente, da leitura no mundo, no Brasil e na escola, enfatizando as lutas das camadas sociais menos favorecidas pelo direito ao conhecimento. Demonstra a situação da leitura nas escolas públicas estaduais e municipais de Ensino Fundamental I e II na periferia da cidade de São Paulo, com o objetivo de justificar a crise da leitura na Educação. Verifica como é feita a escolha dos livros didáticos e paradidáticos na escola publica, assim como sua distribuição e acesso pelos alunos. Analisa o trabalho desenvolvido em quatro destas escolas em relação à aquisição e manutenção do hábito pela leitura. Avalia e conclui que o problema da construção do interesse pela leitura reside na falta de conhecimento, por parte do leitor, e do distanciamento das práticas sociais da leitura, pela escola.
