Previous issue date: 2013-08-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aimed to describe the embryonic, larval and juvenile development of the cachara Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, as well as changes in growth patterns, as well as changes in patterns of growth, in view test the hypothesis of occurrence of differential growth during ontogeny initial of the species. A total of 70 eggs, 220 larvae and 20 juveniles from induced breeding were analyzed for morphometric and meristic variables, besides the allometric growth coefficient during the larval and juvenile. The eggs presented 1,79mm of mean diameter, ample vitelline space (23,41%) with 0,42mm of mean size and the average diameter of the yolk was 0,95mm. The standard length (SL) of the larvae ranged from 2.98 to 19.47 mm, and the total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 50 (= 13-16 Anal pre-and post-anal = 30-35). The initial pigmentation is scarce, restricted only a few chromatophores on the ventral region of the body and so concentrated in the anterior and posterior extremits of the yolk sac. From the flexion stage it intensifies in the upper region the swimbladder, in the head and along the dorsum, forming a longitudinal band in the lateral face of the head that extends from the snout to operculum and two in body, a dorsal and another ventral, who unite on the caudal peduncle. Initially there is a differential growth especially of the head and tail, with subsequent accentuated growth of the trunk, which shows changes in ontogenetic priorities for eating, swimming and breathing capabilities. Thus, the information obtained in this work are of great importance to the ecology, systematics, and production of the species, particularly in aspects related to ontogenetic variation in morphology, growth, feeding behavior and mortality. / Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever o desenvolvimento embrionário, larval e juvenil do cachara, Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, bem como mudanças nos padrões de crescimento, tendo em vista testar a hipótese da ocorrência de crescimento diferencial durante a ontogenia inicial da espécie. Um total de 70 ovos, 220 larvas e 20 juvenis provenientes de reprodução induzida foram analisados quanto às variáveis morfométricas e merísticas, além do coeficiente de crescimento alométrico durante o período larval e juvenil. Os ovos apresentaram diâmetro médio de 1,79mm, espaço perivitelino amplo (23,41%) com tamanho médio de 0,42mm e o diâmetro médio do vitelo de 0,95mm. O comprimento padrão (CP) das larvas variou de 2,98 a 19,47mm e o número total de miômeros variou de 45 a 50 (pré-anal=13-16 e pós-anal=30-35). A pigmentação inicial é escassa, restrita apenas a alguns cromatóforos na região ventral do corpo e de forma concentrada nas extremidades anterior e posterior do saco vitelino. A partir do estágio de flexão ela se intensifica na região superior da bexiga natatória, na cabeça e ao longo do dorso, formando uma faixa longitudinal na face lateral da cabeça que se estende do focinho ao opérculo e duas no corpo, uma dorsal e outra ventral, que se unem no pedúnculo caudal. Inicialmente há um crescimento diferenciado especialmente da cabeça e cauda, com posterior crescimento acentuado do tronco, o que demonstra mudanças nas prioridades ontogenéticas para as capacidades de alimentação, natação e respiração. Assim, as informações obtidas neste trabalho são de grande importância para a ecologia, sistemática e produção da espécie, particularmente em seus aspectos relacionados à variação ontogênica na morfologia, crescimento, alimentação, comportamento e mortalidade.
