Previous issue date: 2014-02-27 / This study is guided by two questions: What is autofiction? What is the relationship between autofiction and contemporary Brazilian literature? Since the neologism was created by the French professor and writer Serge Doubrovsky, the concept of autofiction has been widely discussed in theoretical and literary studies, especially in France and in the French Canada. In order to discuss the original definition of autofiction (originally created in 1977) and the will of its creator to continue dictating what may or may not be considered autofiction this study presents a survey of the controversial debate around the subject and reflects on its updates as well as the multiplicity of the current autoficcional Brazilian literature. With this research, we intended to expand the existing debate and contribute to the theoretical and literary studies related to autofiction in Brazil, providing not only theoretical reflections in Portuguese, but also thinking about Brazilian literature. Our hypothesis is that autofiction is a new literary genre, still in process of being established. Therefore, it has been the focus of confusing and contradictory discussions, rejection and fascination. Thinking on autofictions in a plural form allow us to rethink the notion of a tight literary genre, making room for the different currents of this literary practice. We also propose the neologism alterfiction to designate a practice very close to autofiction, a "little sister" of the incipient genre, based on the concept of alterbiography proposed by Ana Maria Bulh?es-Carvalho.
