Previous issue date: 2015-03-30 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPq / The present study investigates, in the light of Labov?s Variation Theory (1972, 2001), the raising of the mid vowels in unstressed final position in the speech of children between the ages of 1:3 and 12 and of their adult caregivers, all residents in the cities of Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Vista Alegre do Prata in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The inicial six-month longitudinal study of the acquisition of the tonic and final post-tonic vowel system of 8 children (5 boys and 3 girls), aged between 1:3 and 2:0, indicated that the seven stressed vowels are already acquired from the age of 1:7. As for the final post-tonic system, the results revealed the presence of the vowels [i, e, o, u] in the data of Vista Alegre do Prata and the vowels [i, u] in Porto Alegre/Pelotas from the age of 1:7. The investigation of the raising process of final unstressed mid-vowels in the speech of 44 children, aged between 1:7 and 12 from Vista Alegre do Prata, revealed the conditioning role of the variables Preceding Context, Following Context, Age Group and Sex for both the coronal and the labial vowel. In the sample of adults from Vista Alegre do Prata, the statistical results for both vowels indicated the conditioning role of the variables Preceding Context and Syllable Type. The results obtained for the sample of children from Pelotas/Porto Alegre pointed out that the production of high vowels is almost categorical. A comparison between the results obtained for the children and their caregivers indicated a correlation with respect to the preferred variant in unstressed final position, thereby confirming the essential role of the input in the emergence of sociolinguistic variation in child language acquisition. / O presente estudo investiga, ? luz da Teoria da Varia??o (LABOV,1972, 2001), o al?amento das vogais m?dias, em posi??o ?tona final, na fala de crian?as entre as idades de 1:3 e 12 anos e de adultos, cuidadores dessas crian?as, residentes nas localidades de Pelotas, Porto Alegre e Vista Alegre do Prata no Rio Grande do Sul. A observa??o da aquisi??o do sistema voc?lico t?nico e post?nico final de 8 crian?as (5 meninos e 3 meninas), com idades entre 1:3 e 2:0, em acompanhamento longitudinal (seis meses), indicou que as sete vogais t?nicas j? est?o adquiridas a partir da idade de 1:7. Com rela??o ao sistema post?nico final, os resultados revelaram a presen?a das vogais [i, e, o, u] nos dados de Vista Alegre do Prata e das vogais [i, u] em Porto Alegre/Pelotas. A investiga??o do processo de al?amento das vogais m?dias ?tonas finais /e/ e /o/ na fala de 44 crian?as, com idade entre 1:7 e 12 anos, de Vista Alegre do Prata revelou o papel condicionador das vari?veis Contexto Precedente, Contexto Seguinte, Faixa Et?ria e Sexo tanto para a vogal coronal quanto para a vogal labial. Em se tratando da amostra Adultos de Vista Alegre do Prata, os resultados estat?sticos para ambos as vogais apontaram o condicionamento das vari?veis Contexto Precedente e Tipo de S?laba. Os resultados obtidos para a amostra de crian?as de Pelotas/ Porto Alegre apontaram que a produ??o das vogais altas ? praticamente categ?rica. A compara??o entre os resultados obtidos para as crian?as e para seus cuidadores indicou correla??o no que se refere ? variante preferida em posi??o ?tona final, confirmando desse modo o papel fundamental do input na emerg?ncia da varia??o no processo de aquisi??o de l?ngua materna.
