Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil / A Seção de Obras Raras da Biblioteca de Ciências Biomédicas da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz constitui-se como importante manancial de informação para os pesquisadores da história das ciências e da saúde. A notoriedade adquirida com os trabalhos de Oswaldo Cruz como sanitarista da capital da República, e os prêmios conquistados pelo então Instituto Seroterápico Federal em eventos internacionais como a Exposição Internacional de Higiene e Demografia, realizada em Dresden, Alemanha, concorreram de maneira ímpar para a doação à biblioteca de trabalhos técnicos, monografias e teses de doutoramento por parte de alunos, técnicos e pesquisadores. Ainda que os esforços da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz para a mais ampla disseminação da informação e do conhecimento produzidos no campo da saúde sejam constantemente renovados, grande parte de seu acervo ainda encontra-se inacessível para a comunidade acadêmica. Nesse contexto, essa pesquisa tem como objetivo dar visibilidade à produção de conhecimento gerado através das teses de doutoramento da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia, produzidas entre 1853 e 1935, presentes no acervo da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz
Para tanto, foram identificadas as principais temáticas abordadas nessas teses e sua evolução ao longo do tempo através de análise bibliométrica, contextualizando os temas de estudo com as questões de saúde e ciência do Brasil relativas ao período. A escolha do objeto se deu em função da importância que possui a Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia para a história da medicina brasileira. Através da análise desse acervo foi possível agrupá-lo em diferentes categorias temáticas capazes de garantir a recuperação dos documentos de forma ágil, e em especial, despertar o interesse dos pesquisadores por seus conteúdos. Os principais problemas de saúde pública existentes em Salvador entre meados do século XIX e as três primeiras décadas do século XX estão refletidos nos estudos realizados por parte dos formandos da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia. Acredita-se, ainda, que a disseminação do material objeto deste estudo trará nova luz aos que se debruçam sobre o tema da história das ciências e da saúde, uma vez que este conjunto documental expõe a preocupação da elite médica baiana com os problemas de saúde da população como um todo / The Rare Book Section of the Library of Biomedical Sciences of the Oswaldo Cruz

an important source of information for researchers on the history of
science and health. The notorious works of Oswaldo Cruz as sanitarist of the Capital of
the Re
public, as well as acquired prizes by, at that time, Serum Therapy Federal
Institute, at international events as the International Exhibition of Hygiene and
Demography, held in Dresden, Germany, contributed in a unique way to donation to the
library, of te
chnical papers, monographs
and doctoral theses by students
, technicians
and researchers. Although the efforts of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation for the wider
dissemination of information and knowledge produced in the field of health are
constantly renewed, mu
ch of his collection is still inaccessible to the academic
community. In this context, this work aims to give v
isibility to the production of
knowledge
generated by PhD theses of the
Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, produced
between 1853 and 1935, and present
on the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation acquis.
Therefore, were identified the main thematic addressed on these PhD theses and their
evolution over the time, contextualizing the study subjects with health issues and
science in Brazil for the period. The selection
of the theme was based on the importance
that has the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia to the history of Brazilian medicine. The
analysis of the collection enabled the generation of the different classifications able to
ensure the
retrieval
of documents expedi
tiously, and in particular arouse the interest of
researchers for their content. The most important problems of public health that
occurred in Salvador between the mid
-
nineteenth century and the first three decades of
the twentieth century are reflected in
the research done by the students of the Faculty of
Medicine of Bahia. It is believed also that the
dissemination
of the material object of
this study will bring new light to
whom embrace
the theme of the history of science and
health, since this whole
documentary exposes the concern of Bahian medical elite with
the population health problems as a whole
