Previous issue date: 2007 / This research has for objective to analyze the characteristics of the atmosphere of the regular school that contribute to the reception and the student's permanence with special educational needs in the school institution. It also seeks to: (a) investigate the established relationships between the students with special educational needs and the other individuals at the school; (b) verify if the participation and the special students' interaction contributes to their wellbeing and permanence at school; (c) identify the activities that foment the students' participation with special educational needs in the classroom and in out-of-classroom situations. It is a case study developed at three schools of the Municipal district of Fortaleza, taking as subjects three students with mental deficiency and one with physical deficiency. The used methodology was: observations at the schools, semi-structured interviews with the students (subjects of the research), their parents, and their teachers. The registrations were made in a diary, in tape recordings and with photographs. The results indicated that the playfulness, the school activities and the affection contribute significantly so that those students feel welcomed, establish good relationships at the regular school and want to stay there. / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar as características do ambiente da escola regular que contribuem para o acolhimento e a permanência do aluno com necessidades educacionais especiais na instituição escolar. Ela visa, ainda, investigar: (a) as relações estabelecidas entre os alunos com necessidades educacionais especiais e os demais sujeitos da escola; (b) verificar se a participação e a interação destes alunos contribuem para o seu bem-estar e permanência no espaço escolar e; (c) identificar as atividades que favorecem a participação dos alunos com necessidades educacionais especiais na sala de aula e em situações extra-classe. Trata-se de um estudo de caso desenvolvido em três escolas do Município de Fortaleza, tendo como sujeitos três alunos com deficiência mental e um com deficiência física. A metodologia utilizada foi: observações nas escolas, entrevistas semi-estruturadas com os alunos sujeitos da pesquisa, seus pais e suas professoras e a fotografia. Os registros foram feitos no diário de campo, em gravações e por meio de fotografias. Os resultados indicaram que o lúdico, as atividades escolares e a afetividade contribuem significativamente para que esses alunos se sintam acolhidos, mantenham boas relações pessoais na escola regular e queiram nela permanecer.
