nÃo hà / O presente trabalho tem por objetivo estimar a contribuiÃÃo das micro e pequenas empresas (MPE) para a reduÃÃo da pobreza no Brasil, a partir dos dados dos 26 Estados e do Distrito Federal nos anos de 2000 e 2004. O arcabouÃo teÃrico utilizado fundamenta-se nas hipÃteses de que o segmento de micro e pequenas empresas, que representa 98% das empresas do paÃs e que responde por 56% dos empregos formais gerados na economia, exerce uma influÃncia na reduÃÃo da pobreza, associado a outras variÃveis que jà tÃm esse desempenho comprovado, como a renda mÃdia e o grau de urbanizaÃÃo. Os principais resultados obtidos indicam que hà uma relaÃÃo significativa entre o crescimento das micro e pequenas empresas e a reduÃÃo das medidas de pobreza no paÃs, especialmente na porcentagem de pobres e no hiato de pobreza. Com esse estudo espera-se contribuir com a literatura sobre o tema e com o debate sobre as polÃticas pÃblicas voltadas para as micro e pequenas empresas como instrumento de melhoria dos indicadores sociais do paÃs. / The goal of this paper is to estimate the contribution of micro and small enterprises (MSE) in the reduction of poverty in Brazil, based on data obtained from 26 States and from the Federal District (BrasÃlia) from 2000 to 2004. The theoretical framework utilized is based upon the hypothesis that the segment of micro and small enterprises, which represents 98% of enterprises in the country and is responsible for 56% of formal jobs in the economy, plays an important role in poverty alleviation, associated to other variables which already have this performance proven by average income and degree of urbanization. The main results obtained point towards a significant relation between the growth of micro and small enterprises and the reduction of poverty levels in the country, mainly in the percentage of poor people and the poverty gap. This study aims at contributing with the literature on this topic as well as with the debate regarding public policy geared towards micro and small enterprises as an instrument to improve the social indicators of the country.
