Previous issue date: 2008 / The relation between international trade and economic growth has been the object of great controversy in both theory and applied literature. Among other points of disagreement, there is no consensus on the existence and the direction of causality between these two variables. In the attempt to explain this relation, many applied studies have been undertaken, even though there is a relative scarcity of studies applied to the Brazilian economy. In this context, the aim of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between international trade and growth for the case of Brazil in the period of 1947-2006. The specific objectives of the study are: a) to present the main theories and applied studies on the subject; b) to describe the evolution of international trade and economic growth and in Brazil on the last 60 years; c) to investigate the causal relations between these two variables. The main conclusions of this study are the following: a) there is robust evidence of export-led growth in Brazil; b) On the regional level, the results obtained suggest that there is bidirectional causality between state exports and growth; c) in terms of policy recommendation, the continuation of the ongoing commercial opening process, along with export promoting strategies, are thus justified. / A relação entre comércio externo e crescimento econômico tem sido objeto de grande controvérsia na teoria e na literatura aplicada. Dentre outros pontos de discórdia, não há consenso sobre a existência e a direção da causalidade entre estas duas variáveis. Na tentativa de explicitar essa relação, muitos estudos aplicados têm sido empreendidos, embora se verifique uma relativa escassez de estudos analisando a economia brasileira. Neste contexto, a perspectiva deste trabalho consiste em analisar a relação entre comércio externo e crescimento, enfocando o caso brasileiro no período 1947-2006. Os objetivos visados com este estudo são: a) apresentar as principais teorias e estudos empíricos acerca do tema em questão; b) descrever as trajetórias do crescimento econômico e do comércio externo no Brasil nos últimos 60 anos e; c) investigar a relação de causalidade entre estas variáveis. As principais conclusões do estudo são as seguintes: a) existe evidência robusta de que o crescimento da economia brasileira é liderado pelas exportações (export-led growth); b) no âmbito regional, os resultados obtidos sugerem que as exportações e o crescimento dos estados brasileiros possuem uma relação de causalidade bidirecional; c) em termos de política econômica, justifica-se, portanto, o aprofundamento do processo de abertura comercial em curso e a adoção de estratégias de promoção das exportações.
