Previous issue date: 2006 / This study speculates the causes of errors in mathematics. An investigation was undertaken of the relationship of error not only with the language used in mathematics but also with the students’ mother tongue. Factors related to mechanical and out-of-context learning were also taken into consideration as potential sources of errors. Significant learning is proposed as an alternative to minimize the problem. The study was put into effect through an instrument projected specifically with the means of trying to identify the potential causes of errors made by junior and senior high school students. Public and private schools participated in the study. Furthermore, in the public school system, both state and municipal schools were included. The sample was composed of 150 randomly selected students of both genders, who studied either in the morning, afternoon or evening in the capital or the countryside. / Neste trabalho são feitas algumas especulações sobre as causas do erro em Matemática. É feita uma investigação da relação do erro tanto com a linguagem matemática quanto a materna. Fatores relacionados com a aprendizagem mecânica e descontextualizada como fontes potenciais de erros são igualmente levantados. A aprendizagem significativa é proposta como uma alternativa a minimização do problema. O estudo foi efetivado por meio de instrumento projetado especificamente com a finalidade de tentar detectar as causas potenciais de erros cometidos por alunos do Ensino Médio, especificamente do segundo e terceiro anos. O estudo abrangeu escolas públicas e privadas. Nas públicas, as esferas municipal e estadual foram contempladas. A amostra investigada foi composta de 150 alunos selecionados aleatoriamente contemplando estudantes de ambos os sexos. A composição do estudo inclui ainda estudantes dos três turnos envolvendo também escolas da capital e do interior.
