Previous issue date: 2015 / The general objective of this work was to evaluate the personality, based on the theory of the Big Five, and its relationship with the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning in the elderly. Thus, two studies were conducted, a theoretical and an empirical one, both presented in article format. The theoretical paper, through a systematic review of the literature, sought to identify biopsychosocial aspects related to personality, according the theory of the Big Five in the elderly. The research included in the review presents a significant number of participants, offering samples represented by different countries in Europe and North America. The results showed that the personality characteristics may differ according to sex and age of the person. They also indicate that high or low levels of the characteristics influence how a person deals with aspects related to health, quality of life and social interaction activities. The empirical study aimed to examine the relation between personality traits and the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning in elderly. We conducted a quantitative and cross-cutting research with 108 elders residing in cities around Porto Alegre, who answered the following questionnaires: Socio-Demographic and Clinical Data Sheet, Personality Factor Battery (BFP) and The Older Adult Self-Report (OASR). In the statistical analysis, beyond the descriptive analysis, we estimated a Pearson correlation coefficient to assess the linearity relation. A multiple linear regression analysis was also performed, in order to determine which personality traits predict the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning. To estimate the reliability of the responses, we calculated the Cronbach’ alpha coefficient of the research tools. The results show that the personality trait Neuroticism was negatively correlated to the Adaptive Functioning and positively correlated to the Psychopathological operation, being considered the most relevant predictor of the Adaptive and Psychopathological Functioning. Thus, the findings indicate that personality traits can vary in intensity throughout life and have an influence on psychopathological and social aspects of the elderly. / O objetivo geral desta dissertação foi avaliar a personalidade, baseada na teoria do Big Five, e a relação desta com o funcionamento adaptativo e psicopatológico em idosos. Assim, foram realizados dois estudos, um teórico e um empírico, apresentados em formato de artigos. O artigo teórico, por meio de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, buscou identificar os aspectos biopsicossociais relacionados à personalidade dentro do modelo dos cinco grandes fatores – Big Five – em idosos. As pesquisas incluídas na revisão possuem um número significativo de participantes, sendo amostras representadas por diferentes países da Europa e da América do Norte. Os resultados apontaram que as características de personalidade podem diferir quanto ao sexo e à idade da pessoa. Também indicam que níveis altos ou baixos das características influenciam a forma como a pessoa lida com aspectos relacionados à saúde, à qualidade de vida e às atividades de interação social. O artigo empírico teve como objetivo verificar a relação das características de personalidade com o funcionamento adaptativo e psicopatológico em idosos. Realizou-se uma pesquisa de método quantitativo e transversal, com 108 idosos residentes na Grande Porto Alegre, que responderam aos seguintes questionários: Ficha de Dados Sociodemográficos e Clínicos, Bateria Fatorial de Personalidade (BFP) e The Older Adult Self-Report (OASR).Na análise estatística, além da análise descritiva, foi estimado o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson para avaliar a relação de linearidade. Também foi realizada a análise de regressão linear múltipla, para verificar quais fatores de personalidade predizem o funcionamento adaptativo e psicopatológico. Para estimar a confiabilidade das respostas dos idosos, foi calculado o coeficiente de alpha de Cronbach dos instrumentos aplicados. Os resultados apontam que a característica de personalidade Neuroticismo apresentou correlação negativa com o funcionamento adaptativo e positiva com funcionamento psicopatológico, sendo considerado o maior preditor do funcionamento adaptativo e psicopatológico. Assim, os achados indicam que as características de personalidade podem variar de intensidade ao longo da vida e influenciar os aspectos psicopatológicos e sociais do idoso.
