Iodine assumed biological significance some one hundred years ago when it was shown by Chatin that a condition now known as exophthalmic goiter was due to a deficiency of this element. Since that time the accumulated evidence indicates that the only biological function of this element is its role as a constituent of the thyroid gland secretion.
