In 1949 Bird and Whalen (5) noted the presence of a microsporidian in field populations of the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.). As studies of the mortality factors affecting the spruce budworm were intensified and attempts were made to work out life tables for this insect, it became increasingly important to know more about this protozoan. Although the Microsporidia have been known since the time of Pasteur and wall over 100 species have been described, little attention has been paid to the affects of these parasites on their hosts. This thesis is an attempt to identify this organism, elucidate its biology, and determine its affect upon the host.
