An Exploratory Study on Drug Using Attitudes and Mental Health Status Heroin Users / 海洛因使用者的用藥態度與其心理健康狀況之探討

碩士 / 高雄醫學大學 / 護理研究所 / 82 / The main purpose of this research is to understand the social and psychological characteristics of heroin users, drag histories and drug-using attitudes; to estimate mental health status of heroin users and the influential factors on drug-using attitudes and mental health status of heroin users; and, to compare the differences between heroin users and non-users on drug-using attitudes and mental health status.
Purposive sampling and matched subjects designed was used in this study. A sample of 1.95 individuals was obtained. All of them are male. 65 of them are drug users, taken as the experimental group. Based on age and education, 130 non-users were selected as the control group. A heroin-using attitudes questionnaire and the "Chinese Health Questionnaire" were used to collect the data. The main findings are:
1.Characteristics of Heroin Users
These heroin nsers are mainly 20 y/o to 30 y/o, high schools and technical or business high schools, single, Taiwanese. Their occupations contributed in different levls. Their income range from NT$20,000 to NT$50,000. High percentages of smoking and drinking, 41.5% have criminal records. 43.2% of them used only heroin. 52.0% of them also use amphetamine among other illicit drugs.
Of drug use methods, 72.3% use sniffing and sucking. The main financial source is wages. 66.2% had tried quit before and 76.7% stopped for less than one month. The order in the degree of difficulty, while quitting are: physical sickness, psychological dependence and the influence of social context and friends.
Ⅱ. Drug-Using Attitudes
1. Awareness of negative effects: Heroin users agreed that the negative effects of drug use where mental burden (82.4%-96.9%), damage to family and society (68.2%-82.7%) and hazard of health (72.2%-78.1%) . The smoking subjects where more likely to aware the negative effects of drug use. Drug users group got lower scores than the control group on the awareness of negative effects of drug use.
2. Benefits of drug use: 22.7% of the subjects believe that using drugs could enhance job performance; 46.2%-67.7% of them thought that drugs could stabilize their emotion and create wonderful feeling. 34.5%-37.6% of the subjects considered drugs use as a personal freedom. On this question, drug users got higher scores than controls.
3. Motivation of quitting: 85.6%-93.7% of the subjects agreed confidence and determination are very important in quitting. 48.2%-43.9% agreed that social context and side effects made quitting difficulty. Subjects with higher education had stronger motivation of quitting. Drug users'' motivation of quitting is not as strong as the control group.
Ⅲ. Mental Health Status of Heroin Users
89.2% of the subjects where in bad mental health status. The order of mental symptoms scores, from high to low, where: depression/poor family relationship, anxiety and worrying, social dysfnation and somatic symptoms. Furthermore, the metal health Stains of drug users is significantly worse than the control group.
