Treatment of Fish Market Wastes by Conventional and Phototrophic Bacteria-Containing Activated Sludge Systems / 活性污泥法添加及未添加光合菌處理魚市場廢水

the conventional activated sludge treatment system (
abbreviated by CASTS) and the phototrophic bacteria-containing
(i.e., Rhodo- pseudomonas sp. ) activated sludge treatment
system ( abbreviated by PTASTS)in traeting fish market wastes.
Hopefully, the addition of phototrophic bacteria (abbreviated
by PTB) of Rhodopseudomonas sp. into activated sludge treatment
system can overcome drawbacks commonly found in CASTS,including
large quantity of excess sludge generated,vast land area
required,and high operation cost needed. The experimental
results reveals that the amount of PTB changed in the PTASTS
can be indirectly analyzied by extracting bacterio- chlorophyll-
a from PTB using an acetone-methanol mixture (7:2, v/ v).
Under light and dark conditions, the decay rate of PTB ap-
proaches first-order reaction kinetics. The dacay coefficients
of the fomer and the latter are 0.169 day-1 and 0.224 day-1,
respec- tively. In the process of CASTS, when organic loadings
ranging from 0.14 to 1.20 kg COD/kg MLVSS-day (i.e., 0.04-0.36
kg BOD5/kg MLVSS-day) were controlled, 86-66% and 94-80% of the
removal of COD and BOD5 were respecitively found. In the
process of PTASTS, when organic loadings ranging from 0.22 to
1.27 kg COD/kg MLVSS- day (i.e., 0.07-0.39 kg BOD5/kg MLVSS-
day) were controlled, 89-69 % and 97-82% of the removal of COD
and BOD5 were respectively found. The afore-said results
clearly indicates that PTASTS is more capable than CSATS for
removing organics (i.e., COD, BOD5). The observed yield
coefficient found in PTASTS is ca. 22% smaller than that found
in CASTS. This implies that the amount of excess sludge
generated from PTASTS is ca. 22% less than that generated from
CASTS. In addition, the amount of oxygen requirement in PTASTS
is ca. 19% less than that in CASTS.
