But high mortality by the cold weather in the winter often cause a heavy loss in the production.It is imperative to comprehend the cold stress response, of the species concerned.In our experiments, low temperature induced hemolymph glucose elevation in both intact and eyestalk-ablated giant prawn. This implies that some factors other than the Crustacean Hyperglycemic Hormone(CHH) synthesized and release from the X-organ Sinus gland complex in eyestalks are involved in hyperglycemic effects. Administration of biogenic amines including dopamine, 5-hydroxytyramine and norepinephrine(NE) into the intact giant prawn all induce hyperglycemia, but NE only showed to be remarkably effective in the hyperglycemic effects in eyestalk-ablated individuals. Under the cold shock, NE contents in thoracic ganglion and hemolymph are dramatically increased, peaked at 5 min after cold shock treatment in the thoracic ganglion and 30 min in hemolymph, while the hemolymph glucose contents were peaked at 60 min after cold temperature treatment. In the time-course changes experiment, the changes in hemolymph glucose content appeared to be highly correlated with the changes in NE content, if the time lag was considered. The
observations suggested that NE is probably an important factor in induced-hyperglycemia of giant prawn under cold shock. The norepinephrinergic hyperglycemia was significantly reduced by administration of metoprolol and prazosin - the antagonists of β 2 and α 1 adrenoceptor, but only prazosin can effectively antagonize the elevation of hemolymph glucose level under cold shock treatment. This results implied that α 1 may be the major
type of adrenoceptor which causes hyperglycemia on M. rosenbergii during cold stress.
