碩士 / 國立中央大學 / 地球物理學系 / 84 / Taiwan is located on the Circum-Pacific Ocean Belt where many
large offshore earthquakes occur and causing tremendous
tsunami. Since the tsunamis caused by earthquakes in Taiwan are
much less often compared with nearby countries such as Japan,
Indonesia and Philippines etc., the people in Taiwan is not
aware of tsunamis. However, historical literature shows Taiwan
had been attacked by large tsunamis generated by local offshore
earthquakes. In order to understand the possible origin of the
historical tsunamis, we first simulate the historical tsunamis.
From the simulation, we exam the probability of tsunamigentic
earthquakes in Taiwan region. We first obtained the relation
between tsunami amplitudes and earthquake magnitudes in Taiwan.
In the simulation, the tsunamis propagation and the well
developed numerical tsunami computation technique are utilized
for the computation of synthetic tsunami to obtain the relation
between earthquake magnitude and tsunami amplitude. The overall
results will provide us an opportunity to estimate the
probability of tsunamis. We obtain these conclusions in this
study as follows: 1.The comparison between the earthquake
magnitudes at least needed in this study and earthquake
magnitudes on historical records are satisfactory. There is
only the discrepancy about the 1661/01/08 Tainan Tsunami. The
possible cause is that the earthquake magnitude on historical
record is mistaken. 2.The smallest earthquake magnitudes that
could excite large tsunamis with tremendous damages in eastern
and western coast of Taiwan are 6.7,7.3, respectively. 3.The
CWB quick earthquake warning system will be applied to the
empirical formula about the relation between earthquake
magnitude,maximum tsunami amplitude and distance, in addition,
the average tsunami propagation velocities in each area will
provide us arrival time for local tsunami warning.
