碩士 / 國立中山大學 / 海洋生物研究所 / 84 / Different host specificity is commonn in symbiotic organism.
Larval preference, post-settlement mortality and juvenile (or
adult) preference are the possible mechanisms. In this study, I
use highly host specific coral-inhabiting snail Coralliophila
violacea as a model example to investigate the mechanism of
host specificity and the host effect on symbiotic organisms. I
surveyed the infestation frequency of Porites by C. violacea at
two different water depths. Morphology, patch size, size
structure and reproductive ability in snails inhabiting
branching and massive Porites were compared. In the labortory,
experiments were designed to investigate the relationship
between the snails and hosts, larval preference, host searching
and host recognition of snails. Both water depth and host size
influence the distribution of C. violacea. The infestation
frequency was higher at shallow water than at deep water. The
high abundance and large colony size of Porites at shallow
waters might be ultimate factors for the snail''s preference,
while larval phototaxis and larval preference on Porites may be
proximate mechanisms. Survival of C. violacea are dependent on
the presence of host. All snails were dead in the absence of
the host in five months. The larval preference on Porites and
the adult recognition of coral tissues are mechanism of host
specificity. Besides morphology, patch sizes, life histories
and the size structures of snail populations were all dependent
on host. High frequencies of solitary snails, slender shell
morphology, small females and low fecundities were character of
snails on the branching Porites. Early sex change of solitary
snails can explain the small size of females on branching
Porites in contract to the massive Porites. Reproductive
isolation between snails in the two hosts is likely, since the
sedentary snail remain on the host and only mate with snails on
the same host.
